for those that have been through a FPEB, what was it like?

what can my husband expect?

is it as nerve racking as he's making it in his head right now?

do you get the finding of FIT/UNFIT right then and there?

I'm AF. I did the formal board and it was irritating! for me, I entered a small room with my attorney and sat in front of 3 people. One board president and two other members. I got asked several questions to which I gave my honest answers. One individual had a computer and had all my records and asked me questions based on what the doctor's notes were saying. I found that to be unfair because I had no idea what the doctors wrote in the records. Additionally, I felt like based on their attitudes, they had their mind made up about my "fitness" before I ever came in the room. Before I left the room the president mentioned me applying for LAS, so that basically let me know they were going to find me unfit. (I was wanting a fit finding). I found out about a week or so later I was found unfit.

My experience was similar. Small room, my lawyer, a LTC, a MAJ, and a COL medical officer. The other two officers were not medical officers. They had laptops up and could see all of my officer Evals and everything about my career. They were interested in how my condition effected my ability to perform my job. They were polite and seemed to want to understand my situation. I was misdiagnosed at the time and they did not agree with me but they were polite about it. I got the misdiagnosis overturned eventually and the PEB was forced to remand my case back to the meb.

What are your specific concerns?

thank you both for your responses.

i guess you could say there are no specific concerns that me or my husband have at this time - we just know nothing about it, so he's going into it blind. we understand that his lawyer will be speaking to us a little more in detail about it, but his FPEB is may 8th and his lawyer emailed us yesterday to let us know that he would be calling to speak with my husband about the thing more in depth around may 2nd.

my husband also will not be going to the FPEB in person, due to being unable to travel [both driving and sitting in a car] for more than an hour or so, and the trip to DC is 4-6 hours, depending on traffic. he just cannot do it, and the lawyer seems to be fine with that because of his "clear speaking abilities" - whatever that means :)

my husband is just nervous at this time, and i will admit that i am as well. when referred to the MEB, he had a finding of FIT and contested it; he obviously wants to be found UNFIT because the migraines are just too much to handle after dealing with them for seven years now. the added stressors of the military do not help, as i am sure everyone here can relate.

we really appreciate the input on what it was like. i have heard so many different stories, so i figured i would ask here on the site as well. our lawyer is incredible, so i have no doubt that he will be able to walk us through - but since that's for another week or so, figured i would ask those that were standing in the shoes of someone who actually went up for the FPEB.

so, you do not find out FIT/UNFIT that day, i am guessing? i am hearing that you do.

I was MEBd for migraines and found unfit. Appealed up to headquarters level to get a fit finding. For me it's about getting to 20 yrs. I was at over 18 yrs then. I'm at 19.6 now

My guess is that your husband will be asked why he believes he should be found unfit, since that is his contention.

I'd be prepared with a migraine log. When each migraine started, how long it lasted, what he had to do for it, what he was unable to do because of the migraine.
How many migraines have occurred each month for the last year.
How many full and partial days of work have been missed.
I'd be prepared to talk about activities of daily living that have been negatively effected.

Be mindful that each service has slightly different customs so your husbands experience may be slightly different that some of the examples above.

Most importantly, listen to your attorneys advice and stay on task!

my husband has only been in nine years, but the MEB found him FIT. that is why i say in all of my posts [just about] that it's interesting to see people getting different ratings, findings, etc for the same thing [more or less] i am glad you received the outcome you wanted!

always good to hear from you, mr. charlie.

we asked about a log, and we were told there would be no need for one. regardless, we have one on hand if need be. :)

so far, we have done every thing that the lawyer has asked of us, so we're just standing by for his next request :)

I would write up a sworn declaration as well for you to do about him as well as everything Charlie said. I can attach an example if you want one.

i don't think i understand what you mean - but am willing to give anything a go - definitely attach

Just curious why your husband was found unfit if he is so bad he can’t even do a couple hour car ride? Is he just getting totally screwed?

my husband wasn't found unfit - he was found fit.

he was found fit because they asked his command/chief how this has negatively effected him, and they copied and pasted his latest [good] evals. they admittedly misread what was being asked of them. they, however, corrected it when he contested his finding of fit, and we're sure that has much to do with why he was then granted a FPEB.

i also want to apologize if i have, in any way, mentioned that my husband is getting screwed. i don't believe i have - i am just sharing our experience with others.

thanks

I was the one that said it sounds like he’s getting screwed. I feel for the fact that he has been allowed to go on for so long in his condition. It just blows my mind.

Hope your husbands FPEB goes well.
