Stress Fractures during Basic Training

I went to BCT in dec 2014, I had a stress fracture in my right hip. I was sent home in feb 2015 for 30 days. when I came back to BCT, I had to do BCT all over again. during the whole BCT process I never fully healed from my stress fracture, I began to swell in my knees and had severe pain. I went to the clinic and the doctor said pretty much that my body was done and I was going to to be medically discharged. the day of out processing I found out that my discharge was uncharacterized. why is that?
Just an educated guess, but, it sounds to me you received an entry level separation. (This is probably wrong, in my opinion).
If you were on orders for 30 days or more (and especially if your total time on active duty was more than 6 months), you should have been processed under IDES.

is it possible that I can get any medical or disability from the VA?
Yes. You should apply.

I still have the annoying pinching in my hip, I just want know what are my options, if there are any!!
Apply to the VA for disability compensation. Also, consider applying to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records for Disability Retirement or at least separation pay.

Best of luck!

Hello my daughter was giving a 30 day convalescent leave her injurys are grade 3 stress fracture in the left hip area and grade 1 in the right hip area, does this mean she comes home for the 30 days

Hello my daughter was giving a 30 day convalescent leave her injurys are grade 3 stress fracture in the left hip area and grade 1 in the right hip area, does this mean she comes home for the 30 days

There are two separate issues- her convalescent leave and the issue of where she is authorized to travel. She should check with her chain of command (and she might have to request travel outside of her local duty area in order to "come home.")
Asking for permission would be the first step. Likely, the determination would be based on her duty status (i.e., trainees would be more likely not granted a larger travel area....a senior member would more likely be given liberal travel privileges).

Hope all works out well for your daughter!

My daughter is in the army basic training in Fort Leonard, Missouri.
After 1 month there she injured herself, they did a MRI
On her, her injury was a grade 3 stress fracture on the left side of the hip area. They gave her 2 hours to decide surgery or no surgery, she said no. They gave her a 30 day con leave 2 weeks into the 30 days her commander told her that she also had a grade 1 stress fracture on the right side of her hip area. He then yelled at her for not informing him how serious her injurys were, if she would of informed him he would of gave her the 30 day con leave at home. She is very confused and scared, she then told the commander that they have her cleaning,he responded, do as your told.
Any advice is helpful, thank you

My daughter is been sent home from Army basic training they gave her a chapter 5-17 what does this mean

This is from Army Regulation 635-200:

"5–17. Other designated physical or mental conditions a. Commanders specified in paragraph 1–19 may approve separation under this paragraph on the basis of other physical or mental conditions not amounting to disability (AR 635–40) and excluding conditions appropriate for separation processing under paragraph 5–11 or 5–13 that potentially interfere with assignment to or performance of duty. Such conditions may include, but are not limited to—
(1) Chronic airsickness.
(2) Chronic seasickness.
(3) Enuresis.
(4) Sleepwalking.
(5) Dyslexia.
(6) Severe nightmares.
(7) Claustrophobia.
(8) Other disorders manifesting disturbances of perception, thinking, emotional control, or behavior sufficiently severe that the Soldier's ability to effectively perform military duties is significantly impaired.
Soldiers with 24 months or more of active duty service may be separated under this paragraph based on a diagnosis of personality disorder. For Soldiers who have been deployed to an area designated as an imminent danger pay area, the diagnosis of personality disorder must be corroborated by the MTF Chief of Behavioral Health (or an equivalent official). The corroborated diagnosis will be forwarded for final review and confirmation by the Director, Proponency of Behavioral Health, Office of the Surgeon General (DASG-HSZ). Medical review of the personality disorder diagnosis will consider whether PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and/or other comorbid mental illness may be significant contributing factors to the diagnosis. If PTSD, TBI, and/or other comorbid mental illness are significant contributing factors to a mental health diagnosis, the Soldier will not be processed for separation under this paragraph, but will be evaluated under the physical disability system in accordance with AR 635-40.
b. When a commander determines that a Soldier has a physical or mental condition that potentially interferes with assignment to or performance of duty, the commander will refer the Soldier for a medical examination and/or mental status evaluation in accordance with AR 40–501. Command-directed mental status evaluations will comply with paragraph 1– 32e. A recommendation for separation must be supported by documentation confirming the existence of the physical or mental condition.
c. Separation processing may not be initiated under this paragraph until the Soldier has been counseled formally concerning deficiencies and has been afforded ample opportunity to overcome those deficiencies as reflected in appropriate counseling or personnel records. (See para 1–16.)
d. Nothing in this paragraph precludes separation of a Soldier having a condition as described in a, above, under any other provision of this regulation.
e. Prior to involuntary separation under this paragraph, the notification procedure in chapter 2, section I; or the administrative board procedure in chapter 2, section II, will be utilized."

From what you have written, I tend to think this was an inappropriate Chapter. Maybe used to quickly separate her without doing an MEB and PEB.

Is there any advice I could give her about her situation

It is hard to say for sure without knowing more about her situation and the documents she was provided with and that she may have signed and agreed to.

That said, it seems to me that there is a potential for her missing out on valuable benefits and compensation (both from the military and from the VA) depending on what happened in her case.

At this point, I would advise her to talk with the base Legal Assistance office to review her separation and to discuss any options. It is not clear if she could yet stop this separation action or if she will have to raise her potential claims via the appeals process.

Could my daughter appeal if she got chaptered 5-17 out for femoral neck fracture during army basic training

I am currently in almost the same situation. On the 21st of November I was sent to get an mri where they found 2 level 4 stress fractures, one in each femoral neck and a bone neoplasm in my left femur. I had surgery to put screws in my hip and a biopsy on the tumor. The physical therapist says the recovery will take 4 months. I’m not sure where to go from here. Does this mean I will be chaptered? Any advice?

Yes. If the chapter has already been accomplished and executed, the likely avenue of appeal is through the Army Board for Correction of Military Records.

Hello my daughter was in military boot camp for almost 1 month. She recieved a fibula stress fracture. She said no to surgery. Now she's home in pain.they gave her an uncharacterized medical discharge. If she received the stress fracture in military training shouldn't they be responsible to a certain extend.any advice is helpful thank yoy

I know that this has to be a very trying time for both you and your daughter cshelvock. My prayers go out to both of you. I've been where you are right now! My daughter has been diagnosed with a stress fracture on her left ischeal pubis ramus, a stress fracture in the thicker part of her pelvis and a stress reaction on her right pubis ramus, injuries she incurred during her 5th week of BCT at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. This occured the last week of November 2010 and after being home on 30 days of con leave over Christmas and still in a great deal of pain a little over 2 months into the healing process, she decided to give up her dream of being a Soldier and is currently going thru the MEB process and will be medically discharged. It's been 5 months since she was put on profile and she is still not healed. And like you, one of our concerns was and is the possibility that this injury could cause her problems for the rest of her life.

First off, I think your daughter should ask her Doctor and Physical Therapist about Con Leave. That is something that would allow her to heal at home for approx 30 days, with loved ones, and give her some time to make up her mind which direction she wants to go with her Military Career. It's a big decision. Let me tell you, this has been a LONG process and we are still an estimated 7-8 weeks from having our daughter home again. Like your daughter, she too wants to get home and start down another career path. She feels like so much time is being wasted by sitting around waiting for paperwork to be processed.

Good Luck to you and your daughter. And yes, please thank her for her service to our Country! If she goes through the MEB process due to her injuries, she will more than likely come out with Veteran Status. STAY STRONG for her and BE PROUD of her. She needs all the support she can get through this process.

Always, ArmyMomAZ[/QUOTEsad to say, I'm glad I'm not alone. My da
Unfortunately with experience I can tell you that the majority of those now responsible for your daughter will not treat her like she is human. When my daughter was a holdover under orders for no lifting or walking without her crutches they were moved from company to company and at times was on the 4th floor because that is where the girls were housed. so at every meal she had to walk up and down the stairs with 4th degree fractures on both sides. She also had to carry all her belongings from barracks to barracks. She was finally discharged by med board in October of 2011. She was given 6 months of Tricare and when she was examined by the VA in November the fracture in her hip was actually worse than the original MRI in April 2011. then they would not extend Tricare at the end of 6 months even though she was still not healed in March of 2012. I will say that there was another girl who was injured months before my daughter that finally graduated basic after 30 days con leave soon after she was injured and then about a year of healing as a holdover before she was sent back thru basic. It was nice to see her graduate but she went thru hell to get there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. If you email make sure you put PEB forum in the subject line.
So sad that these kids sacrifice, get hurt, and then suffer! My daughter came home 2 weeks agog rom Fort Sill after developing a grade 4 stress fracture in her femur neck in the right hip, cartilage deterioration in both knees, fractured left foot and a sprained ankle. All of this within the first couple of weeks of basic. She then was put on crutches for 5 weeks and was forced to step in the basic training camp while being bullied by others and the drill sergeants. She was told by the doctors that if she didn't have surgery there she would be discharged. She did not have these issues prior to enlisting. She was supposed to be sent to the sick bay to begin discharge within the first week of injury. After 6 weeks of torture, she finally signed an AMA just to get out. She is now home hurt and unable to use crutches due to the injuries on both legs, and no medical benefits to help fix her. I don't know what to do, we can't afford the medical finance this is going to take just to get her back to being able to walk on her own, much less go back to a normal working life. She's only 19! Does anyone know how or what is available for these injured soldiers?

My daughter has been diagnosed with level 4 stress fractures on both sides of her pelvis. They have put her in a wheel chair and put her in quarters. She is about 6 weeks in. They may have also diagnosed a potential disease that will affect her hips that was unknown before the injury. Needless to say she will not graduate . If they decide to send her home how long does the process take. She said that they make her sit at a table all day and that is it. Kind of being punished for being injured. From what I read it is a timely process. She is guard not full time. She has a full time career waiting on her that she put on hold to serve. I wish they would say thanks , but isn't going to work out and send her home so she can get on with her life. Does this ever happen?
