I'm E5 starting MED Board in November for back (injury while deployed) and knee. I hit my 8 year mark in January. I understand at the end of the process I will receive a DOD and a VA rating for my conditions. It has been almost 7 months since my back surgery and I have been released from Physical Therapy. Doc doesn't believe ROM will improve any further. Flexion 15 degrees. All other measurements have very limited ROM as well. Say I get 30% DOD and 50% VA and get medically retired. How does compensation work? Which rating determines my compensation pay? 30% DOD or 50% VA? I appreciate any inputs. Thank you!

Your compensation will be based on whichever gives you a higher amount. Also keep in mind that VA pay is tax-exempt whereas DOD disability, in most cases, is not.
