VA caregiver program

UPDATE #1:

"In his FY 2017 budget, President Obama is proposing $182.3 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Funding will continue to support the largest transformation in VA history; expand access to timely, high-quality health care and benefits; and advance efforts to end homelessness among Veterans."

In my opinion, of particular interest with the President's Budget for Fiscal Year 2017 is the following:

Caregivers (Title I) Programs. —Obligations in the Medical Services account for 2017 are estimated to be $700 million. The Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010, Public Law 111 –163, authorized VA to provide assistance and support services for Caregivers of eligible veterans. This program provides a wide range of services for primary caregivers to include: a monthly personal caregiver stipend, respite care, access to mental health services, beneficiary travel, and health care benefits through the existing CHAMPVA Program.

Estimated operating levels are:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2015 actual ----- 2016 est. ------- 2017 est.
Caregiver Stipend (dollars) ......................................................... 387,667,765 ---- 516,605,000 --- 629,271,000
Caregiver Caseload .................................................................... 24,771 ----------- 30,644 ---------- 36,644

To that extent, it may seem that the DoVA Family Caregiver Support Program shall remain active for at least another fiscal year; good deal for sure!

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer!"

Best Wishes!

Has anyone who applied for for the caregiver program, was told they had to provide 6 months of medical evidence?

Hmm, not from my experiences with the DoVA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.

In retrospect, the DoVA's new program for certain Veterans needing the assistance of a caregiver has specific criteria which must be met comprehensively. As such, it seems that the Veteran doesn't have to be currently enrolled in DoVA health care benefits to qualify. Albeit, current enrollment in DoVA health care benefits would definitely afford the DoVA Caregiver Support Program Office access to the Veteran's applicable VA benefits to validate specific Family Caregivers program criteria requirements.

Indeed, if the Veteran isn't enrolled in DoVA health care benefits, then it seems logical that the DoVA Caregiver Support Program Office would need medical evidence and/or medical documentation in order to properly process the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers application.

Nonetheless, in either aforementioned situation, the Veteran must meet the criteria of the requirement needing at least six months of continuous supervision or assistance with performing basic functions of everyday life due to a serious injury or mental disorder (including psychological trauma or other mental disorder) incurred or aggravated in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. Take care!

Warrior, can you check zip code 33027. The calculator isn't working for me. Thank you in advance.

Hmm, unfortunately, I am also having difficulties with new SCAADL Calculator not being operational at this point in time.

To that extent, I forwarded an e-mail to the Military Compensation Office's "contact" e-mail address and hopefully will receive a response as to the operational status of the new SCAADL Calculator webpage.

Hence, more to follow upon receipt of additional feedback from the DoD's Military Compensation Office. Take care!

Any luck as of yet?

Any luck as of yet?
Unfortunately, no! :(

Albeit, I forwarded a second e-mail to the DoD's Military Compensation Office a couple of days ago and still waiting on that particular response. Hence, in the interim, I am still having difficulties with new SCAADL Calculator not being operational at this point in time!

Hmm, indeed, if I don't receive any response after a week of the second e-mail request...that will be a total of two plus weeks without any responses. So, my next step is to try to directly contact the DoD's Military Compensation Office (via telephone) and/or other Military Health System (MHS) Organizations or its Related Organizations for any potential assistance. ;)

Hopefully, there shall be more to follow upon the receipt of any direct feedback from the DoD's Military Compensation Office. Otherwise any feedback, hopefully, as a result of an alternative route via other MHS Organizations and/or Related Organizations to the MHS. Take care!

My husband is 100% P&T veteran who gets CRSC and SMC as well. Last year he had his final medical evaluation and was he was upped in his rating and put on P&T. I have been his caregiver for about 3 years in the program but his caregiver on my own since 2009.
Now there is a new reassessment that will take 4 hours that we both have to attend. I was informed last year of this new change and just got my appointment scheduled. I was told this is like his P&T appointment but only for the caregiver program.
I am wondering if anyone else has been through this new reassessment and what to expect? Is this a way to start cutting people from the program? It sounds just like a MEB and all of that, sadly it will take us 2-3 hours just to get to the appointment so this will be a very long day. I am hoping to get any advice on this matter from anyone who might have been through this already.
Any information or advice on this new reassessment would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I get phone calls every 3 months from the caregiver social worker/nurse and then I get an in home visit every year for my veteran and myself.
But this is something I was told would happen last year. That everyone in the program will have to have a reassessment with basically all the doctors just like a MEB. It has to be both veteran and caregiver. I have been told this is for everyone but still haven't heard of anyone else having to go through this. I am unprepared about what to expect or how any of this works.
Since my husband is P&T I am not sure how doing all this is relevant even if it is for the caregiver program. He isn't going to get better and in fact I am doing this full time for him. So any advice is so greatly helpful. Thanks all.

How long does it take for the VA caregiver rep lady to get back to you? I haven't had my caregiver money for 5 months now. FYI I have been getting it since 2013 BUT 5 months ago my wife n I split due to my disability, so another person has to become my caregiver (so I had to switch by getting out of the program and re enrolling, aka starting over). SOO my caregiver n I were used to that tier2 pay and now I hurting (2200 less a month does that to you).

I usually hear back from the support team in about 24 hours when I contact them. I called the 1800 caregiver number and they said this it normal to have this entire process again. But I feel like this is just a way to justify cutting us from the program and I con't understand what the exact purpose is for this long day of appointments. I haven't had any trouble with the program, I was informed that I have to participate every month in come sort of caregiver support and sometimes that doesn't work out so this appointment has me confused and a little scared.

Indeed, as we are aware, the purpose of the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers’ Program is for the Primary Family Caregivers to assist Veterans with their recovery goals and to help Veterans attain the highest level of wellness or independence possible.

That said, the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers’ Program is a temporary program requiring fiscal year federal funding in order to sustain its operation. Therefore, as we have been informed numerous times by the Caregiver Outreach RN at the 90-day Monitoring Visits/Assessments that the goal is to eventually transition the Veteran from the Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers’ Program. Take care!

I'm having the same problem can someone calculate my zip code 91604?

Thanks in advance
Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

Unfortunately, the new SCAADL Calculator remains non-operational at this point in time at least for me too! :(

As such, reaching out to several organizations for assistance during the past 34+ days has resulted in absolutely zero feedback!

Hmm, maybe whatever issue with the online new SCAADL Calculator shall self-correct itself albeit it's not looking as that shall occur anytime soon in my opinion. Take care!

Hello. I know this has been a long thread.

My wife was just approved as my caregiver at tier 3. We are currently displaced from our home due to some issues that are getting fixed, so I only have access to mobile devices and cannot get the stipend calculator tool to work. I've been trying for hours with no luck.

Im hoping someone here could help me out and post the tier 3 stipend for zip 02809.
