Are you requesting the default amount based on the year of discharge or the exact amount based on tax returns?
If the latter, how did you determine the information needed, assuming you don't still have the returns?
I was able to get my transcript from 2002. I had to speak to a person, it wasn’t possible with the automated system.I'm in the same boat...well, almost...I'm in Texas. ETSed in 2002, so there is no way that I can get an IRS Transcript from back then. Plus, I shouldn't be expected to keep a copy of my Federal Tax Return for 16 years!
I reached out to DFAS to request a copy of both my W-2 from 2002 (since all of my employment in that year was DoD-related...Active Duty, NAF, AAFES) as well as the Disability Severance Payment voucher, which was issued about 30 days after my last LES. Go to https://corpweb1.dfas.mil/askDFAS and select Military LES Requests.
Got my letter 2 days ago. I’m getting it all back (plus interest). As long as I don’t dispute the amount (uh, NOPE!) I will get my check in 2-3 weeks. I’m like a kid waiting for Santa the way I’ve been checking the mailbox every day for the last few months!Yeah, I literally just finished paying my recoupment in June of this year (16 years and 5 months post medical separation)! It was a pretty nice severance at the time, just wish I knew then what I know now and I wouldn't be going back through the process all over again with a PDBR.
No, you can get the exact refund, based on your return from that year. Also interest. If you get the standard amount and then later figure out what it should have been, you can have it adjusted, deducting what you already received.Wah?!? You don't have to take the default amount, which is actually why I started this thread in order to track down a method of getting the correct information to file for the exact amount.
Got my check on Thursday!! I’ll post a timeline in a bit. WELL worth the wait! The 16 years of interest was more than the original amount withheld. I called Thursday morning and the nice gentleman I spoke to told me it had been worked and gave me the total ( we BOTH squealed), then he told me the check hadn’t been cut yet, but it should be soon. I resolved to not stalk the mailbox for at least a week. Even sent my son to get the mail. Low and behold the check was there! When I deposited it the next day the teller did a double take and looked and me before she checked the IRS fraud site and got an override for my deposit!! Good luck!!JEEBUS!!!! 16k in taxes daaaaannnnnngggggg
Looking forward to any info you can provide after they receive/update your paperwork.
I sent a message to the IRS accounts on twitter, see if they say anything
You can get your adjusted gross income off your transcript. You’ll have to order that, and depending on how long it’s been you may have to do it manually, rather than online. The IRS site has instructions for filling out the 1040x, all the information will be on the tax transcript. It was a little more complicated than doing my yearly taxes with an online site, but definitely doable, and worth it if it’s been any time since your discharge and you had a substantial tax withheld (that info is on your DD214 in the comments section).Still a bit confused on this. I went to the 1040X instructions and found some information about what evidence is needed but does anyone know of any of the Veteran's organizations that will help with filing out the 1040x I have no idea what to put where. For example: if we don't need our tax return from that year how do I fill out the adjusted gross income and as such.
Yes, I saw someone else had received interest on their standard refund on another thread (sorry, I can't recall which one) and that's how I knew that I might actually get some back. I really thought it would only go back 3 or 7 years, but they paid interest all the way back to 2002.If you select the standard amount, do you think they still add on interest?
