Timeline

Hey y'all, first time poster.

I am currently going through the IRILO process. My paperwork from my PCM was started back in Sept and nothing has been sent to AFPC yet. My commander has done his impact letter, my LOD has been done the DAWG process has been completed as well (from what I have been told). My PEBLO is so terrible about informing me about anything that my commander is involved with getting in contact with her, also seems like she has an excuse for why my paperwork has gone anywhere (when I actually hear from her). From Oct 1- today, it has been 164 days I have been going through this process. Last I spoke to my PEBLO she told me my PCM was completing some checklist before she can send it off to AFPC. I am getting really pissed off with this whole process and am looking for any information possible.

  1. Once my paperwork actually gets to AFPC, how long should they take with it and advise my PEBLO on their decision?
  2. How long after my PEBLO gets notification will I start going through the VA process?
  3. How do they determine my retirement date?
  4. Does the process start moving faster once the paperwork is sent to AFPC?

Sorry for all the questions, like I said earlier, I am extremely irritated by this process. It seems extremely broken and no one seems to understand that I like to be kept inform on things involving MY career.

I am going through the process now... My IRILO was sent to AFPC on 5 Dec and was back from AFPC with a decision on 7 Dec. Granted, some cases are easier for them to disposition than others.
I was going through the VA process very shortly after that. Our local VA/IDEAS liaison had my claim submitted with all me records on 11 Dec. My appointments were scheduled about a week after the claim was submitted but due to the holidays they weren't until the 2nd week of January. The longest part so far has been waiting for QTC (VA contractor) to send back all the paperwork. My last appointment was 15 January and we didn't receive it all back until 27 February.
I have an amazing PEBLO who so far has been correct in saying that the delays almost always are on the VA side of things and not AFPC.
I have attached the timeline flowchart they gave me when I started.. hope it helps.

Thanks for your reply! Happy to hear that the process has gone smooth for you. What vase are you stationed at? So it seems as though once my paperwork actually gets sent off to AFPC that they are pretty quick to turn it around. My case is pretty simple so it shouldn’t take that long, pretty bad when my PCM says if I don’t get 100% he will be shocked. Lol

My paperwork just seems to be getting hung up everywhere and it’s just so frustrating to know there is nothing I can do. People at DM just seem to be taking their sweet time with it and don’t really seem to have any sense of urjency. I hate not being involved with my own career determinations.

Thanks again for the response and good luck to you in your journeys!

I am at Fairchild. Please try not to take what your PCM says to heart too much. Ratings are completely based off of the VASRD and what the examiners put on your DBQs. Just don't want you to be upset if it doesn't go the way your PCM says.
Also I just thought of something... You say your commander did the cc letter... But have you signed it??

All my paperwork is completed that is required by me and my supervisor and commander. All my paperwork is sitting at DM waiting on some checklist I’m guessing that was drawn up as a last check so nothing got missed but a month to do that?!? Seems pretty overboard to me, may even be longer. I don’t think too much about what my PCM says and the 100%, but my situation is pretty deep.

So my main concern, besides my paperwork getting sent off, is the time I’ll be waiting once my paperwork hits AFPC. You said your took 2 days. I am cool with that, how long after that did it take your PEBLO to schedule your VA appointments scheduled and how long after AFPC returning paperwork did you attend your VA appointments?

Thanks again for all your input, really helping me realize that the process should start speeding up once my paperwork is sent off.

The PEBLO doesnt schedule them (at least here). I was set up with a VA liaison, not the official title but the best way to describe it, who developed my claim and submitted the exam request to the VA. The request was submitted 11 Dec. My appointments were all scheduled within a few weeks after that. I had 8 appointments altogether and the last one was 15 Jan.
Now that the exam notes are back finally and my PCM finished the NARSUM addendum, I am just waiting for the MEB to be held (the 618 form filled out by 3 docs at the MTF). After that it'll go back to AFPC.

How long did it take from the time your PCM said "I am putting you in for an MEB" to get your paperwork sent off to AFPC?

That is hard to say because I've actually been tracked by the DAWG since April of 2018 but they were waiting for me to be stable on meds before starting everything. They officially decided to start the IRILO in mid-October and it was sent of to AFPC beginning of December.
In fact, I just signed my Medical Board Report (no surprise that it said refer to IPEB) this morning. So now the whole package goes back to AFPC for the IPEB to decide if I am fit/unfit for continued service. My PEBLO says that will likely be back in the next week or so; after that it will be waiting on the VA to send AFPC the proposed ratings. Praying I will be one of the cases that turns quickly and not what I am seeing here constantly about waiting months for the VA to send ratings.

Finally got an email stating my package has been sent to AFPC. My MEB process started in September and here we are in the middle of March and my stuff is just now getting sent up. About darn time! Fingers crossed I come back requiring a full MEB. Back surgery gone wrong and in and out of the hospital for almost 2 years due to that. 21 1/2 years in and from what I have been reading, pretty much anyone over 20 years will get medically retired! I will post more when I find out. Thank you Kbert84 for chatting with me and explaining your process, we had our stuff started around the same time and you are waaaaay farther along than I am. I will hit you up for more info I am sure.

Goy my IPEB results today.. No shock that I was found unfit. Now the real wait begins for VA ratings.

Hell yeah! Sorry for all the questions, I’m just lost in this process. So you did all your VA appointments before you got your unfit rating? My package just got sent to AFPC as I-RILO, so I’m guessing that’s just decide if I’m return to duty or MEB? Just hope the decision doesn’t take long Roy decide to MEB me, I can almost guarantee that’s what they will decide.

Yes the I-RILO is just a preliminary step for AFPC to decide whether to do a full MEB or return to duty. If they say full MEB you do all your VA appointments first. The paperwork they send back (DBQs) will be part of the package sent to the IPEB for the fit/unfit determination.

It’s all starting to make sense to me now. Lol. You also said the VA takes the longest? Do you know what your rating from the VA is already? Then, last question for now, say you are rated at 75% from the Air Force, does that mean you’ll get 75% of your base pay for retirement instead of the standard 50%? For me, I’ll have 22 years in by the time this process is over so I will be at 55% for my retirement check. Hope that makes sense. Thanks again for all your help, I appreciate it more than you can understand.

I do not know the ratings yet.. once the IPEB makes an unfit finding they reach out to the VA to ask for ratings. My PEBLO say on average she sees it take about 6 weeks for ratings to come in... with the caveat that some are much quicker and some are much longer.
As far as pay goes this is the best explanation I have found:

Pay Base x Disability or Retirement % = Monthly Payment

To determine your Pay Base:

If you entered the military before September 8, 1980, your pay base is equal to your salary during your final full month in the service.
If you entered the military on or after September 8, 1980, your pay base is equal to your average monthly salary for the last three years of your military career.

To determine your Disability or Retirement %:
You get to choose one of the following (preferably the one that will give you the higher monthly payment):
Your retirement percentage. This is equal to your total number of years in the military multiplied by 2.5%. So, if you were in the military for 18 years, your retirement percentage would be 45% (18 x 2.5 = 45).

For both of these options, the maximum percentage allowed is 75%. So even if you are given a 100% rating for disability, you can only calculate your pay using 75%. This is because the max you can get for regular retirement with a 30-year cap is 75%, and you can never receive more than the maximum allowed for retirement.

Finally got word my package was sent to AFPC! She said it takes on average of between 5-10 business days to hear anything back once they receive the package. Does anyone know if they send it electrically (I’m assuming they do) or by snail mail? I hoping this process starts to get moving along faster now, it’s already been a long 6 months!

I just went through the IRILO process and it took about 6-7 business days for me. It was electronic and sent back to my PEBLO and then my PEBLO notified me by email of full MEB directed.

If a full MEB is directed you will meet with your PEBLO who will provide you more details on what's next and you will start your VA process.

The percentage that will be used was accurately discussed above. Assuming your 22 years are active duty, the following will occur:

1. You will likely receive the DOD disability percentage as it is usually higher (example 70%).
2. Your retired pay will reduced by the amount of your VA compensation.
3. Since you have 20 or more years active duty and a VA rating that is presumed to be 50% or more, CRDP will restore some of your waived retired pay.
4. The CRDP plus any residual retired pay from the reduction/waiver cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retirement pay (years of active service x 2.5% x high three).

@Kbert84 I am in U.S Army, and we have the same timeline. It'll be interesting to see if our ratings will be in at the same time. I will keep you posted. The wait kills me though.

What's crazy is, all 3 of our timelines are right around the same and my package has just made its way to AFPC for I-RILO determination. This whole process has killed me in the waiting and not knowing department. Good luck to you @Tech and keep us updated.

Here we are, day 8 of waiting to hear back from AFPC. This crap is seriously getting old. I have been feeling like this whole process was meant to really test my patience and I just have this gut feeling that the rest of the way is going to miserably slow. -feeling frustrated as hell
