Good luck. The processing times seem to vary between the services and the Army has the largest number of claims/applications to process each month.

I have not kept up with wait times in recent years; however, at one point the Army was consistently processing the claims within six months. It is a moving target so lookin at the timelines of others who have posted on this board might be helpful.

In order to qualify for CRSC, which replaces some or all of waived/reduced retired pay, one must elect to waive retired pay dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. This is normally accomplished by NOT checking a certain box on the VA compensation claim form.

The election to receive VA comp is made on the VA claim form. Block 26 should NOT be checked, (If you do want VA comp.)

VA Form 526EZ Sep 2019

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON MILITARY RETIRED PAY (Includes all Uniformed Services Retired Pay): Submission of this application constitutes a waiver of military retired pay in an amount equal to VA compensation awarded, if you are entitled to both benefits. Your retired pay may be reduced by the amount of VA compensation awarded. Receipt of the full amount of military retired pay and VA compensation at the same time may result in an overpayment, which maybe subject to collection. If you qualify for concurrent receipt of VA compensation and military retired pay, the waiver of retired pay will not apply. If you do not want to waive any retired pay to receive VA compensation, you should check the box in Item 26. Note that if you check the box in Item 26, you will not receive VA compensation, if granted. If you are currently in receipt of VA compensation and you check the box in Item 26, your VA compensation will be terminated, if you are also eligible for military retired pay. IMPORTANT: VA COMPENSATION PAY IS NON-TAXABLE. THEREFORE, VA COMPENSATION PAY MAY BE THE GREATER BENEFIT.
-------

If one wants to receive VA compensation, Block 26 should NOT be checked.

Over several years, I have seen many cases where a veteran inadvertently checked block 26 even though their intention was to receive VA comp.

Those MSC's don't really explain filling forms out correctly I guess.

One of the most common misunderstandings is the thought that one has a choice between receiving military retired pay OR VA compensation.

The actual choice is whether to agree to waive retired pay dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. The selection to receive VA compensation does not always result in full waiver of retired pay. They retiree gets to keep any left over retired pay after the VA offset.

If you were guided to a selection of NOT agreeing to waive retired pay, that selection can be changed.

My opinion: It is always best to select VA comp. It is non-taxable and one does not lose the amount of retired pay that is in excess of the amount waived/reduced by the VA comp amount.

Will be looking to submit my CRSC application for a second time today, hopefully all goes well this time.

Submitted my crsc form July 7th, 2021
Email confirmation of documents received July, 8 2021
This is the 3rd time sending documents. First two times, one document was missing. Now it’s all there. Now I wait..

Hurry up and wait, then wait some more, then. Wait again…lol
I checked with DFAS and i got the "it takes 30 days to process" speech and my claim was submitted on 25 June. SO DFAS confirmed I will received retro 1 Aug

The document processing cycle of DFAS is somewhat similar to the processing cycles of the the multiple service finance centers that operated prior to the advent of DFAS in 1991.

Documents that were processed prior to the 21st of each month would effect a change of pay for the payday at the end of the month. Documents processed after that date rolled over to the payday for the next month. In the Army and in order to process received documents by the 21st, an internal cutoff of ~the 16th was used. That allowed all on-hand documents received by that date to be processed by the 21st.

If DFAS had been able to process your CRSC approval document approximately five days earlier, it would have resulted in a change of pay seen on the EOM RAS. Retroactive payments often take longer.

Good luck,
Ron

Thanks again RonG

Quicker approval and payment would be ideal , but since we don’t live in a perfect world, I just have to wait.
I agree 100%.

It is much better than what it was years ago.

Not too many years ago, the Army's CRSC applications processing time was six months...plus.

I had waits of one year (2x) and 30 months (1x) for back pay which included some VA compensation from the VA.

My CRSC adventures included this mess: Military update: DFAS: Error left thousands of military retirees out of Retro Pay <---LINK

I submitted 1claim for on July 7th, so we will see who gets to hear back first lol
I did submit one back in June, but I called and the Rep on the phone said that he was not seeing it in his system, so he told me to resend it....this was after 3 weeks of waiting in JUN.

I check the HRC records about 2-3x a day, but nothing. Just funny when i did a claim in May, it took 4 days for them to make a decision and thats why i called after submitting in June because it was taking way longer. now I'm a full 7 days and automatically think bad or what's going on. I guess we are spoiled now-a-days as it is extremely quick compared to previous processing times lol.

Brooo… just got the award letter via HRC records, APPROVED,,
Took 5 business days from the day I submitted, to being approved.
