Title 32 Technician Medical Retirement Scenarios (Please limit posts to "Technician Medical Retirements")

That’s the way to do it Jmc81, good luck to you and hope you start to get paid soon. I received a letter from OPM Macon, Ga. I got someone that’s getting it for me tomorrow and sending me a pic. I’ll follow up and let you know what it is.
Hey Jmc81, it was the password for my OPM account. I logged in, and wanted to check the interim pay amount, but it shows 0. So I will wait till Tuesday, see if anything populates and if not call them.

Well that's something, although it sounds like it's not quite right because didn't you get some pay?

Yes, it’s weird that it didn’t show up on the opm retirement services, it showed 0 for interim pay, so i checked mypay also and thought it might show something there. But from what I got paid it was about 2 months pay of my 60 percent.

Hey Jmc81, I received a call this morning from army benefits center, they said that my application is almost done and just made sure I got some pay. I told them yes, but it doesn’t show up on my OPM retirement account online yet. They told me that it’s interim pay. So that answered my question. Hope you get a response soon

This is what I’m talking about.

So I called OPM this morning, and the pay I received is my interim pay Jmc81.

I'm glad for you hopefully I get something soon also. But should it have been for jan-june 6 months of pay?
It will be back paid at the end, they only gave me 3 months back pay. That’s what he told me.

Good morning, I got a letter in the mail from OPM, it was a statement, it paid me Interim pay for 3/29 to 6/30. So yes it does confirm all the back pay after the process is completed.

I called OPM and actually spoke with someone again. I was told I was approved back in April for my DR. I told her I never received a letter stating that. It sounds like I am waiting on final adjudication to work it. Although I have been told incorrect things before. I told her I never received intriem pay either. That others that started the process after me are receiving intriem pay. Basically she answers phones and doesn't know the whole system and isn't sure why I haven't been paid. I spouted off in anger about this and that how the system is not working right, than realized she doesn't care she answers phones. She told me a supervisor will call me sometime in the next couple weeks, probably unlikely couple weeks ago I was told I would be contacted with in 72 hrs. I just need to let it go for now unless I want to hire an attorney nothing else I can really do. So that's what I have figured out. This process has been way worse than dealing with VA or NGB. Hopefully others in the future read this that way they know if they are dual status they have a long road.

Good thread. I am also a Mil Tech in the USAFR who is going through a Med board right now for being unfit for service. I have 26 years Reserve so will end up retiring, but I am interested in a Disability Restirement on the GS side. I have 25 years Fed time and only 50 years old. I understand I need to apply for SSDI first, should I go ahead and apply now while I am waiting on the Med Board and retirement? Or wait to get the Med board decision?

You have to wait till your orders are cut, as when you apply online it ask if your currently employed and it won’t let you move forward. I applied the day after my orders were cut and sent my copy that I applied with my packet. Good luck

I cut this from a fedtalk article: Under FERS, if involuntarily separated from technician service due to disability or other reason by employing agency, they are entitled to an immediate annuity after reaching age 50 and completing 25 years of creditable service if first hired before February 10, 1996. If hired on or that date, to be eligible for an immediate annuity they must be age 50 with 20 years of creditable military technician service, or any age with 25 years of creditable military technician service. (This early retirement annuity is basically computed the same as a regular annuity.) Based on this you won't get a disability retirement but a normal early retirement but won't be penalized for leaving earlier than 57. I'm not sure if this way is better or worse than DR. Also normal retirement you get a portion of whatever your social security is supposed to be. Something to talk with HR about. I've seen others in the guard get out non retained on military side but they had met the 25 technician rule and retired. With this option you might also be able to draw your TSP at 55 I have to wait till I'm 59 1/2 now.

Here is the breakdown of Fers supplement. With 25 years you would be paid .625 x your social security at 62. I did hear that the government was wanting to rent the supplement to save money but maybe it never went anywhere.

While I was awaiting the outcome on my medical profile (been waiting 5 years now) I decided to file for VA benefits early this year. I finally got rated a few months ago. I was planning on just retiring, but apparently I have a code 37 and not able to retire. Now it's apparently going to a MEB. Just got my CC letter. Are they going to go through the VA again or will they just get my current VA info that I was just issued?

Sounds like you might get a medical retirement on the military side. Not sure I've read on here that they do all new claims with the MEB. Some of the moderators on here have good information ask them, post a question. That was something I was worried about because I had a good rating and didn't wonna be re-rated but mine went another direction.

Hello, new member here! I’ve been reading the threads regarding FDR and I am curious if anyone ahead of me in this process could give me some insight to where I am in the pipeline.

I am dual status tech NG and was medically retired May 06 2022.
Timeline:

April 27- submitted memorandum for 90 day extension to HRO for current position (approved) new thru date 12 August

May 03- met with HRO and submitted disability retirement packet

June 14- received CSA number from OPM

July 26- called OPM retirement center for status update, they said “ it is currently being reviewed by a medical specialist and could take 2 weeks “.

July 30- SSDI claim denied( submitted April 26)

Anyone know how far up in process I could be? Does OPM deny DR for mil tech’s that get medically retired and lose mil membership?

Thank you in advance!

The good thing is you got a CSA number? Are you still working as a Tech? It’s hard to tell where your at on the process as every reviewer is different, but for sure you will get DR under Public law. I got denied regular DR, but since we’re military techs we fall under PL DR.

public law disability 97-253, that’s what we fall under as military techs. Once you start getting interim payments, that means your almost done with your close to being done with your DR process. Your process was faster than most of us on here. It took a while to get my CSA number

Yes, I was able to get a 90 day extension back in May. So my last day in pay status will be August 12. Then I’ll be LWOP until claim is adjudicated. That’s good to know, I did not receive a letter of denial yet for regular retirement. I heard your supposed to get that at some point.
