Commission, MEB & Retirement

Hi, I have a question, If you commission but havent met your 10 year requirement, yet you reach 20 yrs of service and you get MEBd, will that be a retirement? Basically will you still get 2 checks even if you dont reach the 10 yrs as an officer but reach 20 yrs of service? And if so, will you retire as an officer or as your last enlisted rank? Thank you.

If you MEB, you retire at the rate you are when you retire. The 10 year rule does not remove the rank from an MEB retiree.

Your retirement pay will be based on your high-3, including those years while commissioned.

If you are speaking about payment of DoD retired pay and VA compensation, yes, that would involve two payments each month if you meet certain requirements.

---Regular retirement: If you are rated by the VA @ 50% or more, you will receive all your retired pay (some or all of which might be CRDP) + VA compensation. If you are rated below 50% (e.g., 40%) you would have a VA offset equal to the amount of VA comp received, you would receive the remaining retired pay + VA comp.

--CH 61 disability retirement, but has 20 AD toward regular retirement: You would have a VA offset equal to the amount of VA comp received. If you are rated 50% or more, CRDP would restore the waived retired pay not to exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of the DoD retired pay. Any residual retired pay that is considered for disability would reduce the CRDP. You would also receive VA comp.

--CH 60 disability retirement for reservist with 20 good years: Much like the scenario in the preceding paragraph except CRDP would not apply until the retirement age requirement was met. Until the age requirement is met, the entitlement would be residual retired pay + VA comp.
