Diabetes Type 2

My husband is a Naval Reservist. He is a Petty Officer 1st Class, an Intelligence Analyst. He has served for eight years during which time he was on active duty for one year and deployed to Iraq in '06 for three months. He was selected for a commission about two weeks ago, and in the physical work-up prior to his final acceptance, he had to disclose that he has begun taking Metformin for type 2 diabetes since his last physical. The diabetes is borderline and very well controlled; he does not take insulin or follow a special diet. He is fit and passes all his PT tests, etc. Is this an automatic disqualifyier for the commission? Is it likely he could get a waiver? Who should he contact if he is told his commission is denied due to the diabetes?
I have tried to read through all the info on this site, but it is so overwhelming, and I am just trying to get some info for him. He wants to be found fit to serve as well as deploy.

Thanks for any info you can give.
