Hi Folks
Never used this forum or any other. I looking for some info to help. In the AF reserve component and on my 16 year. Recently was seen at the VA for PTSD from active duty years well before. During my physical PHA mental health review they flagged me on a depression med and another med that civilian psych put me on just a few weeks ago. I did not think anything of it when I spoke to the nurse. Now Im grounded to just Drill weekends, I can TDY until they see the records of the civilian psych appt and why I was put on this med. They told me worse case scenario Id be medboard - Im sure how that works in the reserve component. I know this - I dont want a med board. Im also being sent to get a psych eval at an active base.
What can I do? What are my options? Because it was a civilian doc can I still be medboard or just tossed out?

You can be MEB boarded. The reason you got caught/flagged is because in. The last year or two a new system has come online that allows any doctor you see to see what meds you’re currently prescribed. I think it’s to avoid abuse, like a person going to several different doctors to get say opioids, or benzodiazepines.... I know in the last year or so I’ve switched from VA care to civilian doctors and they can all see what the VA had prescribed me, and mental health docs can see what the primary care doc is prescribing and specialists, and vice versa.

Having said that I don’t know the specifics of what meds would cause an AF Reserve meb.

The civilian psych put me on an anti convulsive med. Since I dont suffer from seizures = disqualifying. They assumed it has to be for what they called "rage control". Ive never had an outburst or anything to be considered rage. I have a good record in and out of the military behind me. I had some things happen on active duty many years ago that I finally decided to speak about with the VA. VA screens me for PTSD - fine. My civilian Psych agrees and when I leave prescribes me with the anti convulsion med. Im thinking it was a normal med for PTSD issues. Im hoping this can be cleaned up. Im not liking the way the AF is making this sound right now.

The "off label" use of medication is common (like using a med for X for PTSD). Hopefully this will workout. Another plan would be to talk to the prescribing doc and tell him/her the stir this is creating. He/she may have a plan B in mind.

Additionally, check the resource section of this website for your service guidance of disqualifying conditions o you can avoid medication regimes that trigger more attention. I assure you there are many people in service with mild to moderate PTSD that continue to serve.
