Fort Carson Timeline

Hello, I'm currently in the WTU here at Fort Carson. I'll start off with my timeline so far and then move on to details about the WTU and other programs to help future Soldiers assigned to one. Fort Carson, from what I understand from what the MEB Doctor said, is the fastest base for processing Soldiers through the entire process. They seem competent and not rushed, so I guess it's a good thing. It's far different than it was just a few years ago due to VA ratings becoming much faster.

23 Oct 18 - Permanent Profile (P3) Submitted
27 Oct 18 - Met with lady at MEB who went through my files and had me write why I should or should not be entered into the MEB
1 Nov 18 - MEB Accepted me
2 Nov 18 - PEBLO Meeting
4 Nov 18 - VA MSC Meeting (MSC is Military Service Coordinator. They are the best link between you and the VA and are a wealth of knowledge)
8 NOV 18 - VA C&P Exams Started
28 NOV 18 - VA C&P Exams Finished (8 in total)
4 DEC 18 - NARSUM provided to me
6 DEC 18 - NARSUM legal reviewed and I signed and returned agreed to PEBLO
20 DEC 18 - Found Unfit. Unfit memo came back to PEBLO.
20 Dec 18 - ebenefits.gov changed to gathering of evidence
28 DEC 18 - ebenefits.gov changed to Preparation for Decision
30 DEC 18 - VA Sent me a letter requesting entrance examination from 2007. I told the VA MSC that I did not have it. She submitted a note to the ratings officials letting them know. (Sped up process)
3 JAN 19 - ebenefits.gov changed to Step 6. Pending Decision Approval
3 JAN 19 - ebenefits.gov changed to Preparation for Decision

WTU- You in process in the Headquarters Company for 30 days. It's a regular but shortened inprocessing. You will go through a lot of appointments. This is the optimal time to GO SEE the specialists you need to get your issues checked out. If you do this, your VA claims process will be much more smooth. If you don't have a paper trail for your conditions, expect very little or no compensation. You will move to one of the companies, at Carson there's just the Alpha Co. Your primary and only duty is to attend Adaptive Reconditioning in the morning and then go to appointments.

IDES- Your PEBLO and VA MSC are your best friends. A competent PEBLO can make your entire process much easier. If the VA sends you something, don't be afraid to ask the VA MSC about it. They asked for my entrance examination. I told the MSC I didn't have it. She let them know. It saved probably 20 days that they would have waited if not for the MSC. Make sure to take your NARSUM, 199, etc all to legal. No one can force you, but take it to them even if you get 100% VA/ 100% DOD. Rather safe than sorry of course.

Yeah, the staff tend to care a lot. Most of them have been here a long time, so they are good at what they do. It seems the Army has the best process for IDES, in my opinion based off what I read on here.

I can't really complain so far, I feel like my process is going a lot faster than I can remember past friends have. I am just hoping that the rest of my process continues on a smooth and moderate pace. It gives me time to plan and make sure I am doing the best with my time.

Thanks chaplaincharlie.

In other news, my claim went historical on VA GOV and Ebenefits. It seems like I'll have proposed ratings in hand within the next couple of weeks.

I just received my ratings/199. I rec'd 100 VA and 100 DOD. The VA has SMC Codes K and S1. I don't understand financially what those codes mean as of yet. My next steps are to file for SSDI and bring the 199 to legal today.

My timeline is now:

Congratulations to you hopefully the results are as expected

Yes! The PEB Attorney was spot on with her guesstimation of what I should expect. For what it's worth, they place your next exam one year out from when you case was initially opened if you are on the TDRL. Anything mental health related they almost always place on TDRL is what I understand now.

I have heard the TDRL is now mandatory for all behavioral health issues as they have the ability to "change" rather than remain permanent so its now mandated to be placed in TDRL for any condition that gives benefit for behavioral health. Otherwise congratulations and I hope my next step is coming soon.. I should see my NARSUM I am hoping this week.

Yeah the TDRL is mandatory now. The VA Made it permanent though. I'm not worried much about the DOD part to be honest. The chances of me being fount fit are unlikely. Even the PEBLO and MSC both kind of laughed when they said I would have to be reevaluated to come back to active service. That says a lot.

Also, of note :

9 JAN 19 - Came down on the retirement list.

It can take 10 days, so the one day turn around was unprecedented. My future timeline now looks like 1 FEB PTDY, followed by trans leave, leading up to 26 March which is my retirement day. That will mean I am a Vet as of 1 April and receive VA compensation as of 1 May I believe.

This is all moving very fast to be honest. I could see how it would overwhelm people. I pretty much have 6 business days to finish my leave packet and SFLTAP plus CIF. I would choose this over waiting a year like people used to do though.

We were like a day apart in the beginning up until the NARSUM. I got my NARSUM 5 DEC appealed it and got the result from that DEC 14 and it was sent to PEB. Got my unifit memo on 3 JAN, still waiting for ratings.

Wow. It should be soon then. I think it mostly depends on which VA regional center is managing your case. The MEB Docs are Carson make it clear that they are the fastest in DOD for processing their medboards. I think it has a bit to do with the regional claims center that Colorado falls under as much as the Docs here.

Hopefully you get what you want!

Hey man, I’m just a tad ahead of you in the process (final out was 23 Jan) but with the same retirement date.

Just a little expectation management with the first disability check, I initially thought the same thing as you (May) but my Aw2 advocate advised me I wouldn’t see the first VA check until around July / August. It’s due to with the Army holding the 20% of your last check.
