Help with Potential Ratings

Hello everyone
First off, thank you for everyone who has posted a lot of helpful information. I am waiting on the VA appointments and fairly early in the process. Attached are the proposed conditions. I was wondering if any of you could guess what the ratings would be for peace of mind. I’ve got my third child on the way and we are trying to forecast finances. Or if you could point in the appropriate forum that would answer as I couldn’t find it. Thank you.

Hard to say but I’d say your final VA rating will be high. As long as your sleep apnea requires a CPAP machine, that’s worth 50% alone. Tinnitus will be 10%. The rest depend on the severity of each condition. Take some time to research especially the PTSD. Read the form for PTSD rating and then compare your CP exam with that form, especially block 4A and see how it compares to the criteria below.

PTSD form:

General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders:

Total occupational and social impairment, due to such symptoms as:
gross impairment in thought processes or communication;
persistent delusions or hallucinations; grossly inappropriate
behavior; persistent danger of hurting self or others; intermittent
inability to perform activities of daily living (including maintenance
of minimal personal hygiene); disorientation to time or place; memory
loss for names of close relatives, own occupation, or own name 100

Occupational and social impairment, with deficiencies in most areas,
such as work, school, family relations, judgment, thinking, or mood,
due to such symptoms as: suicidal ideation; obsessional rituals
which interfere with routine activities; speech intermittently illogical,
obscure, or irrelevant; near-continuous panic or depression affecting
the ability to function independently, appropriately and effectively;
impaired impulse control (such as unprovoked irritability with periods
of violence); spatial disorientation; neglect of personal appearance and
hygiene; difficulty in adapting to stressful circumstances (including
work or a worklike setting); inability to establish and maintain
effective relationships 70

Occupational and social impairment with reduced reliability and
productivity due to such symptoms as: flattened affect; circumstantial,
circumlocutory, or stereotyped speech; panic attacks more than once
a week; difficulty in understanding complex commands; impairment
of short- and long-term memory (e.g., retention of only highly learned
material, forgetting to complete tasks); impaired judgment; impaired
abstract thinking; disturbances of motivation and mood; difficulty in
establishing and maintaining effective work and social relationships 50

Occupational and social impairment with occasional decrease in work
efficiency and intermittent periods of inability to perform occupational
tasks (although generally functioning satisfactorily, with routine
behavior, self-care, and conversation normal), due to such symptoms
as: depressed mood, anxiety, suspiciousness, panic attacks (weekly or
less often), chronic sleep impairment, mild memory loss (such as
forgetting names, directions, recent events) 30

Occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms
which decrease work efficiency and ability to perform occupational
tasks only during periods of significant stress, or; symptoms controlled
by continuous medication 10

A mental condition has been formally diagnosed, but symptoms are not
severe enough either to interfere with occupational and social
functioning or to require continuous medication0

Also don’t expect much if anything for the knee and shoulder pain. VA rates things like knees and shoulder based on range of motion instead of pain.

Tony,
Thank you. I'm wondering how "subjective" the PTSD ratings can be? I'm at NICOE and have been already diagnosed with all of these conditions. Seems difficult to figure out what the ratings would be. It also seems odd that a stroke of any sort is 10%? Especially with all of the other conditions associated. I admit I'm being impatient and thank you for the response it was helpful.

Without details about each condition it would be hard to given an estimate.

I have no idea about the stroke. As for PTSD it’s very common to be rated 30 or 50%. Anything less (10% or 0%) means your PTSD is completely controlled by meds and is very mild. If you have the more
Serious symptoms of 70 or 100% you’ll be rated as such. But it’s hard to get to 100%, that basically means you don’t know your own name, or what time or place you are in. But like I said 30 or 50 is common.

and remember, PTSD has its own specific percentages. You can’t be rated at 20,40,60 or 80% PTSD!!! The only ratings available for PTSD are: 0, 10, 30, 50, 70 or 100.

read, read, read... don’t take my word for it, or your peblos word... study this stuff for yourself. Be your own advocate...
