Hello…

AF reserve O-5 flight nurse.. 26 years… just had LOD’s. For TBI and MST approved… from a 2021 deployment… I started my retirement package.. but my med clinic wants to do an MEB. Need input regarding this .. is it worth pushing forward. With MEB?

How close are you to hitting your Reserve Retirement? When you mention started retirement package does that mean you can retire immediately because you have reached your qualifying age to get your Reserve Retirement? There are some pros to MEB since you have LOD's and that would result in immediate retirement via Chapter 61 retirement so if you aren't there and are only being moved to the Retired Reserve than its a no brainer to MEB.

Even if you could retire immediately due to hitting age 60 or less with qualifying deployment there are additional benefits of a chapter 61 retirement such as waved annual enrollment fee for Tricare select, possibly having pension exempt from federal income taxes if one unfitting condition is designated as combat related by the PEB, and your total unfitting conditions DOD% is higher than your earned longevity of your Reserve Retirement and your pension could be more than your earned reserve pension with it being as high as 75% of your High 3 base. That would create a higher floor for earnings without relying on VA compensation via CRDP or CRSC.

I am 57 years old…and was forecasting to retire in November 2023. I just had my last flight physical and there is no comm from providers with the exception of trying to talk me into retiring. With many title 10 orders completed.. if I was to retire I could collect just 5 mantis later. I am just concerned as the AFRC Reserve Medical Units are extremely slow on processing paperwork and initiating MEB’s. I just do not want to sit for 2.0 years and find out the decide ultimately just to enter me into the reserve reserve retirement system. Just not sure what to do at this point. I am actively being seen by the VA for both conditions.

If you are put in IDES you will not have control over your timeline. So that is one thing to consider.
