Is Bipolar treated with lithium automatically unfit? (USAF)

I just received a prescription from a psychiatrist for lithium to help balance my mood and what they determined was a building manic phase. I haven’t received an official diagnosis yet but probably will once they rule out thyroid problems and whatnot.

The lithium has been amazing for my mental health. So if it works and I successfully treat a bipolar diagnosis with it, is it still an auto MEB and unfit for retention? The regs indicate it is but it’s just confusing about whether or not it’s being successfully managed. I’m an 11 year pilot/major in the AF.

The standards can be found here:

As a major, you know all things are waiverable. So the answer is it depends. But given your AFSC, I would expect an unfit from the IPEB.

For what it’s worth, in my case I don’t want a waiver, I don’t want to fly anymore, nor do I even want to be in the military at this point, so perhaps this is a good thing.
