Just starting this process....

Ok, so I have been active for 15yrs come October. I started having problems in Dec 2006, seen lots of doctors and lots of specialists to finally get an answer of having had no less that 2 strokes resuting in permanent brain damage, of which I am in constant pain, stutter, and have lost most of my left eye vision. I also suffer from hemispherisis on my right side. I am not allowed to drive anymore and was told by my neurologists to look for a new profession as soon as possible. I suffered a 3 bone joint fracture of my right elbow after one of the strokes and told it will never be the same again due to the nature of the breaks and had to have my right wrist rebuild with hardware after an injury during a shop PT session. I am at the end of a third LIMDU period and it will expire in about 3 weeks. I am soon to be travelling to my MTF while I am still undergoing evaluation by a stroke specialist to start this whole process. I could really use some pointers from anyone so I can make sure all goes as it should.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome! :)

I have different issues that will be considered by the board too, and sometimes it seems hard to keep track of all of them at once. So once a month at the end of the month I would go to the records office and get copies of my medical records for that month. Then I would separate them into different categories for everything that I was being treated for. This way, not only is it easy to keep an up to date file of your medical records for yourself, but you'll be able to look through your medical records quicker and see what all the board or the VA have left out that you may feel they shouldn't have.

I don't know which MTF you'll be seen at, but the day they start your MEB packet get signed up for DTAP. This was an informative class, and you may be able to get into another class for it that is meant to get you started on your VA claim before you get out. I would also highly recommend TAP class if you plan on looking for a new job soon after you get out.

The Conditions and Ratings section on this site has a link to all the VASRD (Veteran Affairs Schedule for Rating Disabilities), which the board and the VA will use to give you a disability rating percentage. It is worth taking time to look through to find what you should be rated at. 30% is the magic number for the PEB, with this you get medically retired. Below this, and you get a severance pay.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. It appears as though I am going to be seen in Millington, TN. The clinic staff told me today that it would only take between 3 and 6 weeks once all the paperwork is completed. Only problem is they did not tell me how long the paperwork would take. Go figure.

ETCG123,

Good to have you here! As far as pointers, read the Guide to PEBFORUM, look at your MEB Narrative Summary and see if they have missed anything significant, consider requesting, in writing ,an Independent Medical Advisor for your MEB, and get familiar with the VASRD to see what is an appropriate rating in your case. If you are not satisfied with the results of the informal PEB, demand a formal. Feel free to post any questions you have.

I could really use some pointers from anyone so I can make sure all goes as it should.

Thanks in advance!
