If the Legal Office was correct, I might be the one who was last approved before you, lastlaugh. I was approved for LAS in June of 2014 at 18.5yrs. I was RILO'd once, MEB'd again leading into my 20yr anniversary, and ultimately medically retired in 2016. I was flabbergasted at the time, that AFI 36-3212 was so outdated. It still hasn't been updated since 2009. According to my attorney at Randolph, at that time, the Form 1186 had been abandoned. Instead, I was left to fill out a Word doc riddled with grammatical errors and formatting inconsistencies. When my attorney handed me a copy, I looked at her and said, “My career hinges on this? A Word doc which looks like it was written by a 5th grader.”
I got recommendation letters from various people, ranging from peers and leaders within my AFSC, to former Sq CC’s and supervisors, to the two Wing CC’s my section supported. I also had a recommendation letter with supporting deployment data from my Career Field Manager.
LAS essentially served as a deferment on my first IPEB recommendation of permanent disability retirement. My second MEB played out essentially like the first, including another full eval at the VA. I was able to extend to get my DOS beyond my 20yr mark and was then subsequently asked by Randolph to extend for an additional 7 months to allow time for proper completion of the MEB process. It only took 4.
