BLUF: Should I pursue Med Board process for documented condition if I already have 100% VA rating?

I’m a Navy Sel Res member with almost 19 yrs of total service. Currently on mobilization and getting ready to DEMOB soon. I’m already rated 100% VA. One of my main issues is my back (2x herniated discs (documented as DDD and spondylosis), radiculopathy). I’m currently in a bad flare-up with limited mobility. This is my 3rd since April 2025. Had to take prednisone just to get moving again the last 2 times.

I’m trying to get to my civilian spine doc (VA community care) ASAP to get evaluated. Not confident I can exist with frequent flare-ups without surgical intervention at this point.

What are some considerations going forward giving my situation?

What's your goal? Is your caused or worsened by service?

It's worth it for tricare select for your family, possibly getting a little more taxed income depending on what your dod rating.

Ideally, if I could medically retire and close out this chapter of my life, that would be the goal. Beat up and burned out at this point in the game.

Issue is caused and worsened by service.

Tricare for life would be huge as I do have a family with young children.

Its worth it then in my opinion, but I'm just got started my self. Also P&T. Make sure at least your CO is aware, then do what you can but don't make yourself worse over drill.

Tricare retired reserve select is around $1500 a month for a family for premiums.

Tricare select for medical retirees is a $0 premium.

If you are P&T your family can get CHAMPVA if you decline retired reserve select at least so its not a complete wash.
