MEDBOARD Recommendation at 19 years- 9/11 GI Bill

I'm currently in the med board process at Randolph AFB and have just been contacted by my PEBLO for paperwork and an initial meeting. With only 10 months left until I reach 20 years of service, I’m feeling anxious. I transferred my Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to my dependents, which extended my service commitment until June 2026 to retain those benefits. However, I’ve learned that medical retirement also qualifies for retaining the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB). Ideally, I’d like to extend this process until I hit the 20-year mark instead of serving an additional year. How long does the med board process typically take? Any advice or insights from those who have been through it would be greatly appreciated.

My recommendation would be to delay all your responses/rebuttals/appeals to the last day. So if you are given 7 days to respond, wait until the 7th day. Do this every time. Doing this on every step should extend your process by a couple months hopefully.

I'm 7 months in from being referred to AMRO and I have not completed all my C&P exams yet. I would feel safe if I only needed 10 months.

Make sure to save all of your leave. Reaching 20 AFS years is paramount. For the most part the results of your IDES won't matter if you can hit 20 years. Make sure to claim every condition with your goal that all of your VA conditions combined equals 100%. Also, explain to PEBLO you are in no hurry as you want to ensure you hit 20 years. They can slow down the process too just by sitting on your paperwork. If they have results but sit on it to contact you for a few days thats a few days longer in the process:)

Thank you! I have an appointment with PEBLO (Physical Evaluation Board Liaison) next week. I’m going to do my homework and have questions ready.
