Permissive leave

Is anyone else having issues getting permissive leave approved by their commander? I’m Space Force and we have a ton of NCOs separating in my unit. Acting Shirt says the CO mentioned that it isn't fair that medically separating/retiring members get any permissive leave when those normally separating do not, so he will not allow any. I’ve done a lot for my unit and I’m a really hard worker, so I was really shocked. I talked to my Shirt and he said he will talk with the commander again but is not hopeful. This is mostly a vent but it’s frustrating knowing that they have no idea the amount of stress I feel over this.

Your CO is an ass. So lets not let anyone have a benefit because not everyone does? Also, those who ETS have typically been in 4-8 years. The permissive TDY is an additional benefit for those who are retiring or medically separating or retiring. It's an extra perk for those who put in more time and commitment to their country and for those that couldn't continue to do so due to a medical condition.

It shouldn't be automatic but if you don't approve permissive TDY for a valid reason you are basically going against the spirit of the Air Force Regulations. It hurts morale and sends a message that the CO doesn't have their soldiers welfare as a priority. Probably nothing you can do but if I were going to make an issue about it that is how i would argue for getting it approved.

It's also not "fair" that we are injured or acquire/exacerbate a medical condition while on active duty, but we do our best to serve would be my retort, but im a smartass lol. If your permissive is denied in writing, just make sure you push forward and don't jeopardize your impending separation/retirement.

Permissive is at the CC’s discretion; however the CC should be able to state a mission related reason for denial vice a personal preference. The IG is the next step.

Unfortunately the IG will not substantiate a claim for denied permissive, as mission necessity is purely subjective. There would have to be some documented form of reprisal in order for that to work.

So my permissive was denied again, but they are willing to route a "mission essential" memo to AFPC to extend my active duty time. I need to stay in the local area so my kids can finish school.
