questions

Good afternoon I am in need of some clarification on a couple of things I am getting mixed information regarding my situation below is my situation
Last year I suffered an injury while on PCS leave which put me in ICU and having to have surgery and I was stuck in PCS limbo for about 10months I finally was able to get my branch to allow me to pcs to a close duty station so I can receive better medical care. Currently I have 19 ys 2mnths of service. I would like some guidance on a couple of things I was denied SRU do to my MRD and not might be forced to medically retired. If this is the case will what is the difference between medical retirement and regular retirement as far as benefit wise. I am also worried about the difference in pay with all this being a short-term notification for me and my family regarding this possibility of the medical retirement. any guidance?????
anyone can email me at [email protected] if they have any help

There are very little benefit to getting a medical retirement if you can achieve a 20 year active duty retirement. There is nothing wrong about doing both but the most important thing is to hit 20 years. That ensures you max out compensation. You can't gross out more than a 20 year retirement so you get all of your pension and all of your VA compensation as long as your total VA rating is 50% or higher.

OK, thank you so just to be clear. I’m understanding that as long as I am rated higher than 50% and I make my 20 years I will still be able to receive my retirement pension along with whatever percentage of disability the army decides to give me as long as it is above that 50% mark, I’m sorry if this sounds redundant, I’m just trying to make sure I don’t have to fight the situation and I’m currently in because of the lack of support I had prior to figuring out about this forum

Yes, you should receive your 20-year retirement and your VA disability through Concurrent Receipt. Provis is correct in stating that you should try to get to 20 years. A medical retirement after 20 years is the best situation as your retirement pension should be non-taxable.

Hit 20 years AFS. That is the most important! If they are referring you to IDES and you claim every condition your total VA rating will be 50% or more. The DOD% doesn't really matter if you hit your 20 year regular retirement. So hitting 20 years active duty is by far the most important! Even if your VA % was lower than 50% you can work on getting it increased after you get out.
