Severance pay

I heard people saying that if I get the severance pay, i should choose not to accept that payment. Several reasons people give:
1- Taxes will be deducted of this severance pay so you will not get the total amount of that payment. Nevertheless, you will have to pay for the full amount.
2- you will not get a VA payment until the severance pay is paid in full.

Can anybody clarify this information ?

1 - Look up the St. Clair Decision. If you have a VA claim for the same injury you were severanced for, you can file to get the taxes back.
2 - Example: your VA is 50%. DOD is 20%. VA will withhold the 20% leaving you 30% monthly until the severance is repaid.
