Upcoming MEB; (2)Pulmonary embolisms and DVT

Hello Allan,
I applied for SSDI in June for state of GA under the Wounded Warrior Program. I will let you know how that goes also. The only exam I have went to for SSDI is my mental exam. I am just praying it goes ok. I have been reading a lot of post about other people's experiences. I don't know what to expect for the outcome. This entire process is draining at times:confused:.

Hey
Look I forgot was awarded just 60 percent t for blood clots ? Thanks
Hey Allan0320,
That is great news. Looks like things are going in the right direction. My fingers are crossed for you.

Hello Allan,
Wanted to give you the update that my SSDI was disapproved, I received the letter yesterday (Saturday) :-( I'm so discouraged, but I am going to hire an Attorney to fight this decision. Will let you know how it goes later on.

Wow I got my disapproved to my first one, I have a lawyer doing my appeal today I will keep you posted also. But I do know it takes about 30 days after second disprove for a formal hearing

Hello Allan, I will look for a Lawyer tomorrow and do the same thing. I was going to wait until after my first appeal to get an Attorney but will let someone else handle the appeal. Please keep me posted and I will do the same.

I went through basic training (1971) with blood clots so bad that I had to wear tennis shoes. I continued to suffer with blood clots until 1974 when I suffered two pulmonary embolisms. While recovering (in Landstuhl Army Hospital) I was put on coumadin for life. I continued to served on active duty for another six years. After 10 years of service I was medically retired with 30 per cent from the military and 20 percent from the VA. I NEVER received any rating for the blood clots, embolisms or being on coumadin. After over 30 years, I requested a new evaluation from the VA. I just received the results back (October 2015), and I was once again awarded 0 percent for all of the above. I was medically retired because I was on coumadin, and the recurring problems associated with the coumadin. However, I was still denied any compensation from the VA for the clots/embolisms or coumadin.

Wow I was just award 10 percent from the va that's all. I was like really am taking warfin for life. But am going for ssdi and it look real good just got my first denial and hopefully I have a court date by December I will keep you posted

Hello Gilda, this does not sound good. I personally feel we should be awarded more for PE and DVTs, lifelong anticoagulant. Are you saying the Va took back the original ratings?

I an new to this site, after my knee surgery in Feb 2014 I got a PE in my R lung and a DVT in my R leg from being immobilized. The PE dissolved within a month but the DVT lingered for about 5 months. since then I PCSed in July got caught up with a new PCM and specialists. I just got the results back from my PCM that I have a second DVT in the same leg and will getting a P3, required to take blood thinners for the rest of my life and start the MED board process. I have read all the previous comments I have 22 years AD Army, I was wondering if anyone had any info on whether I would loose out on any benefits if I chose MED Board over regular retirement at this point?

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

In addition with concurrence to @Allan0320 feedback, I had 32+ years of total military service with 26+ years of active duty time. As such, I was officially referred with acceptance into the DoD IDES MEB/PEB process at 24+ years of active duty military service and was approved for SSA SSDI federal disability compensation while still on active duty in the U.S. Army; it was definitely the best outcome by far for sure for my family and I at that particular time due to the unfortunate abrupt conclusion of my stellar military career! :D

To that extent, it wasn't my fault that due to the totality of my medical impairments, a combat-related "disability" military retirement was the legally proper avenue of approach versus the standard and a lot shorter processing duration "length of service" military retirement!

With that all said, you can potentially receive additional benefits by having an opportunity to receive tax-free military compensation if a "combat" or "combat-related" determination is made with your DoD IDES case file, and you shall receive your DoVA disability compensation in a significantly reduced amount of time after officially transitioning to a military disabled veteran. ;)

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

Hello Grunt4life,
I hope you are feeling better after getting PE and blood clots. From what I notice and have read on the Internet, recovery varies from person to person. I know it is scary when you have to think about loosing the security of a steady pay check and entitlements for you and your family. I did not have a choice about this MED board as you read from my first post about my PE and blood clots situation. It happened so quickly when I became ill from these clots. It will be 1 year on 5 Dec 2015 since I returned back to work at my Command full time. It has been a hard recovery for me because this was my 2nd time getting clots as well. This time it was enough to scare me to death at the thought that I almost died during PT (physical training). I was hospitalized and sent home and not returned back to duty. I now suffer from acute leg swelling, post thrombotic leg syndrome, and leg numbness. My breathing has gotten better and the chest pains but my legs have suffered the most. I am just thankful to be alive. I would not change anything to not have been medically boarded. I received 60% from DOD and 100% from the VA. Due to my Length of Service on Active Duty I was already entitled to 62.6% for 25 years of Active Duty. I have multiple illnesses that I filed claim from the VA for, and other back injuries I was found unfit for. The VA gave me 0% for life long Anticoagulant, blood disorder 0%, Post thrombotic syndrome, chronic venous insufficiency, recurrent DVTs, rt extremity 20%, lft extremity 20%.
Going through this Med board has been so tough when you just start because you don't know what to expect as thus far what ratings you will receive for your injuries. It literally will drive you crazy thinking about it. This PEB forum helped me so much, reading from others and writing about it. You will benefit more as Warrior64 and Allan0320 wrote being medically retired. With 22 years of Active duty you are already entitled to 55% of your base pay for Length of service if you had submitted for regular retirement anyway, but it will all be taxed with a regular retirement.
You have nothing to loose but fear, and plenty more to gain from this. I am waiting on my retirement orders now. I filed for SSDI, it was denied in September so I retained an Attorney for my appeal. Everything will work out for you, do not worry. Keep us posted.

Hello RayGilda, just checking to see how you are doing and if you have done anything else with another appeal since you last wrote on 17 Oct. Have you had any complications from your clots that you could file for compensation for an increases. If you read what I just wrote to Grunt4life about the problems I have been having and the ratings I recieved from the problems stemming from these clots, I would not have gotten anything extra concerning where this all started from, if I wasn't having other problems. Did the VA take back your original ratings for your original claimed condition? I hope not.

Thanks you all for the information. II just suffered a PE and I'm currently on xlerto.I will have a meb once I finish all treatments. Also I am AGR 15 years TS and 13 years AD. IfIf anyone has more information it will be greatly valued.
Hello SFSzo,
Have you recieved your Retirement orders yet since you last posted? I'm only asking because we both started our MED Board around the same time.

Hello Allan0320,
I wanted to know how things went with your SSDI Attorney? I followed your lead and did the same. I don't know how things are going to go with this appeal. I have been doing my research with statistical data on what award percentages the ALJ have been giving in the ATL area for appeals.

So far am awaiting on my second decision hopefully I should know something by thanksgiving, if disapprove again lawyer said we go for the hearing within 90 days so hopefully by mar16 all this will be over So how are you doing are you still in?
