I am being permanently grounded due to tinnitus and thus disqualifying me from Air Traffic Control duties. I really don't wont to do anything else in the Navy but I have to cross rate or get out. Does anyone have information on severance package I could receive if I didn't choose another rate? I am currently just over 10 years of active service and have 5 more left on my contract. Also, I would be interested in continuing service to retirement as a Reserve, but dint know what the effect on any severance pay it may have.

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

Unfortunately, I will need to defer to @Jason Perry and/or @maparker and/or other PEB Forum members for their sound insightful feedback to your specific inquiry at this point! Take care, get well, and enjoy life!

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Very interesting, I have never heard of tinnitus making someone unfit. There is no way to make tinnitus give more than a 10% rating unless it is pusitile (sounds with the heart beat), because generally that form of tinnitus is actually a different medical condition.

Typically your serverance would be base pay * 2 * years of service.

As a note, they have treatment options for tinnitus, I have no idea why almost no one receives it. There are hearing aids with white noise generators, military issued me one. It sounds like a really dumb idea, but I swear mine has been working wonderfully. The research is pretty interesting. I have no idea if it will make you eligible to stay in your MOS, it doesn't complete erase my tinnitus, but has made it MUCH more livable. ENT hooked me up with it.

Hmm, this is very interesting indeed in reference to the "hearing aids with white noise generators."

As such, I may pursue this option for my bilateral tinnitus (recurrent) medical condition with the military PCM and/or DoVA PCP; whoever can obtain the aforementioned durable medical equipment initially!

To that extent, appreciate the sharing of information and thanks! Take care and enjoy life!

Do you use a noise generator (fan, water machine, etc) during the day or at night to help you concentrate or sleep despite the tinnitus? Works on basically the same principle. The tinnitus is still there, your mind just ignores it because the other noise is there. The theory being tinnitus is basically your mind filling in noise free times with a new noise. For me, its not 100% effective, prolly 60%, but such a huge difference. If I forget my hearing aid, I notice the difference, and the two weeks where I sent it in to get repaired, the tinnitus got worse each day. Pretty wierd, makes me think tinnitus is less related to hearing loss and more along the lines of a mental health problem, but that's just academic. Good treament is Good.

I don't know of anyone else who has one. I think they are hesitant to advertise the treatment because tinnitus is the #1 claim from the military and they don't want to start handing out $1.5k hearing aids to that many.

Indeed, cost shall remain a huge factor with healthcare treatments for any patient unfortunately! :(

Hmm, very good question! Since the increase in symptomatology with my multitude of medical conditions, I can't sleep/don't sleep hardly; therefore, the use of a noise generator is definitely voided!

In addition, I have an OSA w/ CPAP machine but it's extremely difficult to use because of my physical medical conditions albeit it's not a CPAP mask fitting problem anymore. The CPAP mask fitting issue was corrected and fixed while still on active duty fortunately!

Nonetheless, I shall continue to just exist while trying to "take care and enjoy life" with my family! ;)
