I have been following this board for awhile, and recently became a member. I'm still Active Duty and stationed in the National Capital Region. I'm posting this thread because I'm looking to gather insight from other members who may have been diagnosed with this condition. I'm curious to see what your end result became and if it will be a automatic med-board for me.

I'm currently on a Temp Profile and have been on and off for the past year. I wasn't sure what was causing my symptoms, but after I pushed for an MRI, we were able to find out I have Syringohydromyelia, it then became a no brainer. I'm still on Temp Profile but Im pushing for a Permanent profile because from what I have read they request no venous pressure activity as this can cause further injury. So the from a 3349 and section 5 portion I'm DQ'ed on alot although my PCM who is a NP hasn't changed this as of yet. (We haven't even had the conversation outside of me emailing her requesting it be addressed.)

I have attached my Symptom Timeline, to give a little background into how I have gotten to this point.

I also want to note; The great Ortho-Spine doc said this was an "old" syrinx and just a incidental finding yet from my timeline you can obviously see how this has progressed from service aggravated if not caused by the service. **Unless the NIH say I have Chara Malformation, then this is idiopathic/Trama related.

In the end, I'm curious to see how other veterans have dealt with this issue, and maybe guide me through the med-board procedure as I feel I'm heading in that direction. Any help will be great and will not only help me but other veterans in the future. Thank you an advance for any responses.

The burden is on the military to explain how it was both preexisting AND not exacerbated by military service.

Thank you for your response! I'm 100% confident this issue is service related. I'm waiting to hear back from the NIH on there medical opinion, but I think it will confirm this is new and ongoing and not "old".

I'm frustrated now cause I feel its time we address my 3349 yet my provider is pushing it off. My PCM was hoping the Ortho doc would give a plan of care/profile rec but he didn't address this at all. I reached back out to my provider and have yet to have a Telephone consult or appointment to address the manner. I think its too early for IG/PA and I think that would be overreacting at this point.

Update 01: I received a call from a CPT who said I could not use the Nurse line or outlook email (encrypted) to try and schedule or discuss medical issues unless they contact you prior. "Hippa Violation". No PII or specific medical issues were discussed. The CPT said I needed utilize Relay Health, or appointment line. I then explained that my PCM declined my invitation on Relay Health but that I resent the invitation this morning. I then received a email saying that my PCM had declined my invitation again! Even tho Providers are instructed to use this software, and I'm being told by a CPT to utilize it. They continue to decline it and fail at communicating. I'm trying to fix a 3349 yet its like jumping threw hoops.

Update 02: Received a P2 for Lower Back Pain (Scoliosis). Its progress but doesn't address the main issue. Will continue to keep everybody updated. I wanna be able to help the next solider.

I'm wondering if someone can answer this; Is Syringohydromyelia/syrinx a army/military dis-qualifier? If anyone can answer this or point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Codeman2121, I will say it depends on how it is affecting your health. If you don't have any worsening symptom, it cannot disqualify you from joining the Army.

Thank you for the response. I'm currently in the Army. Im trying to figure out my options moving forward. (Will I be disqualified moving forward.)

Codeman2121, I have the same condition and my pcm is just trying to make sure I get surgery done to drain it and he did not mention anything like MEB.

They currently say I'm not a surgical candidate. They went ahead and gave me a referral to Neuro and Sports MED.

Ok just wait and hear what the Neuro Doctor recommendation is going to be then go from there. Am about to get an MRI w/contrast to rule out any underlying factor.

What are they suggesting the underlying factor could be for your syrinx?

My MRI with contrast says no abnormality, which means there is no underlying factor.
