Hubby was informed yesterday that they are initiating the process to medboard and he has been coded. He has surgery on Monday for his neck. They are giving him some cool titanium discs and a couple of nifty spacers. Anyway, we have a cruise scheduled in late January. He was informed that his leave will be canceled because he "cannot travel outside a 200 mile radius while undergoing the medboard process." I have known soldiers who spent more than a year with the medboard and still have no results. Some move quickly, others don't. They have to determine if his back and neck stuff will be a P3 thereby making him unfit for duty. Since he is having surgery on Monday, I don't see how they are going to be able to determine his ability to perform tasks for several months.

Has anyone else been restricted to a 200 mile radius? This seems asinine to me. Yes, I know it's shallow to worry about a vacation, but if I don't get out of here I may become homicidal :p Plus we risk losing a couple grand if we cancel now. Surgery doesn't worry me, I am sure he will be fine. He should meet with his peblo (is that the right term?) sometime during his 30 day convalescent leave from surgery. Maybe he or she will have answers?

Also, his current ETS is DEC 2012. He obviously cannot re-up as he is coded. If he is still being evaluated and falls within that 90 day reenlistment window and can no longer re-up is he screwed? If they are still evaluating as of his ETS date do they extend him?

I'm just frustrated and looking for any info at all. Thanks!

While he is in the IDES, they cannot administratively discharge him and must extend him. As far as leave goes, he has to clear that through his PEBLO. However, there may be issues going on a cruise. They do not want a member to travel to a place where he may be at risk of getting injured. A cruise excursion may put him in that situation.

We've been on about a dozen cruises without injury LOL We obviously would not go zip-lining on excursions, etc. This cruise is for beach and shopping, relaxing and cocktails. So the PEBLO may be able to recommend or ok the leave stays in place?

My experience with my PEBLO has been that if I wanted to take leave I needed to clear it through him.

The reason for this was because there might be a time sensitive document that comes thru his office (NARSUM, 199, etc) that I would need to sign. So, just as long as the expected time for these documents to arrive was well outside my leave dates he had no problem with it.

At no time did he tell me that I couldn't travel outside of 200 miles.

We have been restricted to a 200 mile radius for 2 years. Homicidal may be around the corner.

Seriously? I would die. What is the rationale behind that? I don't see how taking 10 days of leave will impact any of this. I understand they have to go to the appointments when they come available, but everyone needs to have some time off for morale if nothing else.

The no leave rule is more of a guideline. I was told the same thing early on. I understand the purpose behind it like others stated, but if you time it right, it shouldnt be an issue. Your Commander still has authority to grant leave. No where does the PEBLO sign your leave packet. I would definitely keep them informed so if something like an appointment is required during the leave time frame, your PEBLO should be able to coordinate based on your availability. I am in Hawaii and was told I could take leave on island but leaving island would not be approved. Again this was from my PEBLO, not my commander. My PEBLO does not sign or approve my leave form.
