CC impact statement MEB help

Hey everyone,

Looking for some insight from people who’ve been through the MEB process. My First Shirt is telling me my commander will most likely recommend “retain” because technically I can still perform my job. However, I’ve been dealing with this condition for about 2 years now, and it’s not improving. For context, I suffered two TBIs while in service, and since then I’ve developed chronic migraines that significantly impact my day-to-day life. While I may still be showing up to work, my concern is honestly more about my long-term health and functioning outside the military, not just getting through the workday.

A few questions:
  • How much does AFPC actually weigh the commander’s impact statement?
  • Do my comments on the AF Form 1185 make a real difference in the outcome?
  • Has anyone here had a commander recommend “retain” but still ended up going through a full MEB / medical retirement?
My PEBLO told me it’s basically 50/50, which doesn’t make this any less stressful. Just trying to understand how much my voice matters in this process vs leadership input. Any experiences or advice would really help.

Thank you!

Impact statement does carry weight. At least for the AF you can do a rebuttal on a commander's impact statement. So once it comes to you say you disagree and why. Also, your profile should help you out. For migraines you should a have a profile limiting basically all duties when you have a migraine attack. My wife was Army but regardless of branch there should be a profile. So for instance, profile limits you in that you can do nothing if you have a migraine and to take medication and lay down in a dark room for example. Remember they are evaluating whether you can do your job. Another example is not being able to deploy to austere locations. You should have that profile if your medicaiton is biologics and needs refrigeration.

If you truly have conditions that prevent you from doing your job then they should be on the commander's impact statement. How can your commander state you can do your job? Are you taking care of yourself when you have these health issues/symptoms. The way to sabotage yourself is to try to gut through things where you do your job but are barely holding it together. If you have a migraine attack or other TBI symptoms how are you still able to work? I would assume you would need to miss work while having them if your symptoms are severe enough to prevent you from doing your job.
