chronic kidney disease stage III

After finishing exams, reviewing the NARSUM and going over it with Legal I just do not know what to think. Based on my VA examination, they marked yes on Renal dysfunction based on medical records and doctor's progress notes, but legal says that my test results are only slightly abnormal. I have been diagnosed with stage III. On the one EGFR test they reviewed, I have many others in my records, it showed a score of 72 which she marked normal. there are a lot other scores at or below 60, just a week later. Legal says I will probably get a low rating, or even a zero rating and still be found unfit for duty and put out, because I cannot deploy with this diagnosis. I think that my records show a definite decrease in kidney functions in my medical records, but he says they will go by what the examiner put in the report. do not get me wrong, I am glad my tests are not off the chart, but I do not understand why they do not look at a complete picture instead of one test. Especially since they potentially will find a person unfit for duty. He even said that my blood pressure was good and controlled on medication. prior to medication, it was high as hell! said rating would probably be zero as well. Comments and other opinions are welcome. do you think stage III showing Renal dysfunction would be 0% or below 30%?

This sounds suspect. How many tests have been done? I recently had egfr around 50, doc said it was stage 2. my doctor did a retest, told me to hydrate before as dehydration could cause worse numbers. I hydrated and the next test was in the normal range, he said not to worry about the one bad test.

It’s hard to
Believe that they would MEB someone on just one or two bad EGFR tests alone. What other tests/evidence do they have?

Also take a look at what medications you’ve been on and how they effect kidney numbers. I’ve realized after I had that none bad kidney test that I had untreated high blood pressure for years, and that some of my other meds had side effects of high blood pressure. HBP is known to cause kidney failure if untreated for long periods of time.

I have had many tests. Been seeing kidney doctor for years. They initiated the board after I fell in the stage 3 range.

CKD Stage III is usually asymptomatic, only detectable on blood test. Usually their is no treatment at Stage III. What branch are you in?

I am in the Army. I have a lot of tests in my records as my CKD has been tracked since 2008 or so. I do have consistant abnormal blood work with increased creatine and BUN, although not at the higher levels. Low potassium which sent me to the emergency room. Some blood in urine. But the GFR is not consistently below or less than 60. VA exam concurs with renal dysfunction. I guess my question is, is that enough for the definite decrease in kidney function that would represent the 60% rating? The lawyer said no. He also said that I may get 0% and still get unfit for duty which is kinda mind blowing. Just trying to manage expectations and leverage experience of others.

Thanks, that is what I read. it is where I got the 60% from. Because it says "OR", and my records show a definite decrease in kidney function. If I get less than that from DOD, can I appeal it? or can I only appeal the VA?

My civilian PCM recently told me that I have stage III kidney disease. I don't have hypertension and not a diabetic. My creatinine is consistently over 1.5 and my GFR ranges around 59.

I've pulled up my lab work from the Blue button. And my creatinine and GFR has been high since 1998.

I received my unfit memo last week. Awaiting ratings. the unfit was only for Chronic Kidney Disease. Will see if I get the 60%. Will let the forum know.
