Hi everyone. I was recently found unfit to stay in the navy and am currently awaiting my va ratings. My home of record is california which is where i am currently stationed. My state of residence is PA. My spouse lives in pa and i am trying to figure out if i will be allowed to move to pa with the navys help or if i will have to pay out of pocket to move back east.

My understanding is that once you are retired you get an ets move to wherever you want to end up. I am not sure if this applies if you are separated, but I would think so. (If I'm wrong someone will be along to correct me) However, you won't be able to move until you get separation/retirement orders once the process is completed. Best of luck...Bob

Bob,
I've heard that a couple of times but i also heard that it doesn't matter they will just pay you to your home of record. I have been told i could be retired or i could be seperated. I am on the med board for Major depressive disorder associated from a MST. My psychologist believes i will be retired but i am skeptical about anything that has to do with the military.

if retired, you get home of choice, if separated home of record, however, they may still move you to PA, with you paying the difference in what it would cost them to move you from your current residence to your Home of record ( the address/city of where you enlisted) I say may, cause I've only seen it mentioned and in the AF regs, but pretty sure all transproc policy is army, so universal.

Well that really sucks because i live five minutes away from where my "home of record" is.

If retired from military service, regardless of medical or regular, a retirement is a retirement - so you will be authorized a Home Station of Choice. Make sure this is stated on your disability retirement orders.

In order to get a military retirement, you will need a 30% or better military disability rating. Then your Home Station of Choice kicks in and you can move anywhere in CONUS (there are other places outside CONUS, but you would have to have enlisted from those places to get them to move you back that far).

If you receive a 30% or higher disability rating from your branch of service, take your paperwork down to the folks who do your Movement of Household Goods and sign up for their briefings. They will be able to tell you how many pounds, etc., based on your rank and all that stuff.

You are given about ONE YEAR to relocate from date of discharge. BUT, if you have extenuating issues (like more surgery/recovery), you can ask for a one year extension and can do so for up to 5 years. And, the asking is on you - they won't call you and remind you.
