DEERS shows “Title III” instead of TDRL, and TRICARE says I’m not medically retired?

I was medically retired in December 2025 and placed on TDRL. I already got my Retiree ID. When I tried to enroll into TRICARE Select Group A for medically retired members (the $0 enrollment fee one, I’m still within my 90-day window), TRICARE told me I’m “not medically retired” in DEERS so I’m not eligible for the fee waiver. They told me I need to contact DEERS and have the code fixed.

So I called DMDC, went to my local DEERS offices, and honestly no one seems to know what to do. It’s super frustrating. Everyone is giving me different answers and trying to send me somewhere else. I eventually convinced the DEERS office lady to scan and submit my DD214 and retirement orders into the system. I was given zero instructions on what happens next.

Now when I check MilConnect, my Retirement Type shows “Title III” instead of TDRL. I don’t know if this is the “code” Tricare is talking about or not. What does “Title III” even mean in DEERS? Has anyone dealt with this before?

I’m trying not to lose my enrollment window and end up having to wait until the end of the year. Walking around with no insurance is honestly scary.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Title III in DEERS refers to the legal authority for your retirement (disability under Title 10), but it’s not the code TRICARE uses to verify you’re medically retired. Your issue is likely that DEERS hasn’t properly flagged you as TDRL/disability retired, even though your documents are in. Until that specific status is corrected, TRICARE won’t grant the $0 enrollment. You’ll need DEERS (or your branch’s personnel command) to update your retirement category to TDRL/disability retired, not just “Title III.”
