Hello everyone, new here. I'm a soon to be medically retired army veteran. Served 11 years. I've already received my status of 20% army rating and 90% VA rating. I have 60 days before I'm out.

My questions are this; I've elected to take my severance pay, will I be able to collect my VA as well or I will have to pay the lump sum back before? My next question is, how will this impact my taxes and what do I do to prepare for tax returns? Nobody at this unit, or even my PEBLO has helped with this. Thank you I'm advance!

Based on my experience of receiving severance in 2015, I received the lump sum after separation and did not start receiving VA until it was fully recouped. Pretty sure I paid taxes on the lump sum as any income, but I wasn't medically separated, just involuntary separated due to administrative reasons so not sure if there is a difference when it comes to taxes.

Im sure it was a simple mistype, but just want to throw it out there. You wont be medically retired. With a 20% DOD rating, you'll be medically separated with severance (unless you mean you have more than 20 years).

But in regards to your question, was your referred condition combat related?

Unfortunately no. They blamed a lifting incident from ten years ago as the potential catalyst for my herniated disk.

Eight yer rule for AD service

Explain this please. I've been in over 8
I don’t want to speak for chaplaincharlie, but I believe he’s referencing the presumption that an injury was service-connected or exacerbated by service after 8 years. In your case, however, it sounds like they did, in fact, find it service-related, but what you’re saying is that it was not incurred in a combat zone.
