How long did it take you to get your disability pay after PEB?

VA shows my claim was “Completed” back on May 22nd where it still sits. Accepted my findings and all that jazz. Fast forward, medically retired July 30th. Claim status hasn’t changed, can’t even see my claim letter (I never got one in the mail either) and upon calling the VA they’ve told me “It’s in the last step just keep checking.” Wondering if anyone had to wait an extensive time to get their disability post medical retirement.

Medically retired 16 June. I'm getting my first payment 1 Sept, since my claim didn't wrap up till a few days ago (9 Aug). My claim didn't populate on the VA app/website until a little over a month after I retired even though it was being worked.

Once the VA finalizes your ratings, the decision letter will populate for your May claim & the one that opened the day after you retired (reminder: even if you can't see it as an active claim, it is).

Hope this helps.

Are you getting back pay to your retirement date?

Some people do wait 3-5months

Yes, I did receive back pay. The VA does not pay for partial months. They pay in arrears, so I was paid for 1 July-31 July, which would've been paid out 1 Aug. Back pay was offset by the DoD retirement money I had already received.

How does that work, say you get a grand from dod, it's subtracted from your va pay when you get your back pay?

All retirement pay received by the DOD must be offset by any VA compensation if you didn't retire with 20 year regular or reserve/guard pension. So if the DOD paid $1,000 for a month because the VA compensation hadn't kicked in then once that retro VA payment came you it would offset that amount. So if VA Pay was $4,000 for July retroactively and you received $1,000 from DOD for the same month. The $1,000 DOD would be subtracted and the VA pay would be $3,000 to the Soldier because the VA compensation offset that amount by $1,000.

How do taxes factor in since the dod pay would be taxed, no?
They would be been refunded back. Sometimes they don't take taxes out in the first place on the DOD because they know a VA offset retro pay is in the works. That is what happened for my wife.
