Information regarding ANG and medical hold units

My husband is in the Army National Guard in Texas. Due to various medical issues, both LOD related and not, he has been referred for an MEB. After 18 months, his packet has finally been "completed" and forwarded to QC at Camp Mabry for review. He has been told that after it makes it through QC (if it does), that it will be forwarded to the Board and he should be contacted in approximately 6 weeks. I have no faith that this will actually be any time soon. However, there is a lot of confusion and conflicting information about what will happen once his file goes to the Board. Some in Command structure have indicated that he will be reassigned to a medical hold unit to wait out the process to free up his slot for the unit. Some of those same people have indicated that soldiers in a medical hold unit will receive pay for drill and receive retirement points as if they are actually drilling. Others have said no pay, no points. Still others have said yes to pay and no to points, etc, etc. My husband will have 16 years in January 2014 and was actually hoping to skate by with his profile and be ensured of receiving retirement points for as long as possible. Unfortunately, his unit needs to downsize and he is a good target since he is limited duty. He basically goes to drill and helps with teaching classes or admin duties, or sometimes just sits around all weekend. We believe due to his diabetes and surgery still needed on his ankle due to an injury in Iraq, the decision will probably be unfit. Who knows? I do not know yet what his VA rating will be. His claim was filed in September of 2011 and Friday makes it 26 months and counting without an initial decision - although his eBenefits finally shows "Pending Decision Approval". So, we hope we are close to the finish line or at least the one for the first stage of the race.

Just really hoping someone out there has been through this in Texas (or anywhere really) already and can give us some input on how the process is supposed to work and how it has actually worked for them in practice. Anybody got any information?

Thanks in advance!

I can help you out with the Question on the medical unite. What happens is he will get transferred to a medical hold unite at state ( on paper ) then he will be attached back to his unite. He will still be able to drill with his unite and get retirement points until the MEB/PEB is complete.
It will all depend on what his Physical Profile are.

His last profile is 333113. His unit senior NCOs have begun to become real A$$es about him being there at drill. Saying stuff like "you need to get this MEB issue moving or step up, I don't want to see you here this time next year doing the same crap" or "you just need to give up and get out, the VA and the MEB aren't going to give you anything". Typically, some real motivational characters running things over there. I guess that crap works on young soldiers who haven't been around very long, but not my husband.

It sound to me that he is in a Hostile Work Environment. Maybe its time to visit the State Inspector General Office. If it took his Unit 18 month to send in the MEB packet that is way to long. I have done several MEB packets for my unit and it takes me about 5 Days to do one. If the soldier has all his/her medical records 30 day at the longest. I think it is time that your husband starts playing Hard ball. :)

This is a great place to get information that he will need for the IDES system.:)
