Hello everyone,

Finding myself in a predicament. I have been in the Airforce for almost 10 years and my date of separation is at the end of March 2024. I have just been put onto a med board that will more than likely go past my date of separation. Now from what I understand in AFI 36-3212 states

"1.12. Medical Hold. Subject to certain limitations, medical hold is a method of retaining a service member beyond an established date of separation, an approved retirement or separation date, or established high-year of tenure for disability processing purposes.

1.12.1. AFPC/DP2NP is the only AF entity authorized to place a Reg AF member on medical hold. AFRC/SGO for Reserve members or NGB/SGPS for Guard members is the authority for placing ARC members on medical hold when applicable. (See AFI 41-210, paragraph4.53.1.6.)."

My question is if my med board goes past my date of separation, and lets say hypothetically that I get the results of the med board in June 2024 that they find me fit for duty, would I then have the chance to Re-enlist after my date of separation has passed?
Thank you for the help.

Yes you would need to reenlist if you are not on indefinite orders. If found fit you should be able to enlist before you come off orders unless you are flagged for something.

Thank you for the response. When I would ask about this to others, no one had an answer for me. It appears to be that my situation is not as common from what they said. I was just worried that if they found me fit for duty after my original DOS, if they would allow me time to take me off the med board, and then be able to re-enlist.

Thank you again.

You should be able to but keep communicating with everyone because right now you are flagged and in IDES. You want to reenlist before you are out. Typically you do this ahead but since your are past ETS you won't have a big cushion of time. Not sure if it will be days, weeks so definitely talk to a recruiter so that you can reenlist as soon as possible once you are found fit.

Does anyone here now where to find the instruction on this for the navy side of things?

Yes you should be put on Med Hold as you get closer to your separation date. Yes, if you are found fit, you can reenlist.

The MDG starts the Med Hold paperwork.

my situations in i have orders to separate IRR from active duty Navy and i am also on med board however my admin has told me that i have to separate. my question is if i separate IRR will my med board continue while in the IRR?

I'm in a similar situation. Had surgery that has prevented me from being qualified for duty, but found out I was being passed over for the next rank and given a DOS 6 months out. I'm now 4 mos from my DOS and found out that I was subject to a ARMO/PEB (mini MEB) last week. Could I request that they proceed with the MEB? Or would they know that I'm separating and allow separate without a full MEB?
