Personal statements

Hello all,

I have a question regarding personal statements during the MEB process. I was doing some research and I am getting mixed reviews on this topic. And honestly my PEBLO has been no help what so ever during this process.

Are personal statements useful for the MEB? And if so when do you submit them? I currently just did all my claims with the MSC yesterday so that's where I am at in this process. I have not done any C&P exams as of yet.

I asked my PEBLO if or when I should submit them and all he told me was I can consult with the SMEBC at anytime during this process. I feel like he down not care what so ever he only cares about pushing everything through to get to the next case it seems. And that is unfortunate.

I also had issues with him from the beginning because I felt like my referred conditions were not correct and I voiced my opinion about that to him. So I reached out to my SMEBC about that and he told me I absolutely can fix the
Referred conditions so I called my PEBLO back to let him know what SMEBC said and he said it is too late he's already sent everything up.

Hi, I am currently going through the medboard process and am currently awaiting a formal review board. I can tell you what my opinion is and how the process has been for me so you can make a better decision on what you should do next.

1. I have a good PEBLO, but unfortunately, he is the middleman in the group. If you have a bad one if he can't answer my questions I would go to the supervisor, but it was ultimately whomever wrote your referral to the MEB to give you the correct profile. However:

2. I felt the same way you did when they get done writing your NARSUM you have an opportunity to appeal and get conditions added. A physician called me to discuss. I was able to add conditions, but she wanted to make sure on every condition that I exhausted all possible all options to get better before she would put them on there.

3. I have seen where most are successful through the PEB stage. They didn't add any conditions, but that is what I am fighting now along with being place on PDRL. this is why I am appealing and have heard a lot of successful stories depending on what your commander wrote and evidence (keep going to doctor so you have additional evidence).

In my opinion you only have one shot at this, and the Army has been going fast on the MEB/PEB process as long as the system stays up and working. Exhaust all options and appeals and do everything to make sure you get what you deserve. It's a lot harder to fight once you're out.

I hope this helps at least a little bit. I'm sure you will get more comments on here to help you make the best-informed decision possible.

P.S. if you have a terrible SMEBC like mine consider hiring your own attorney, but I feel you can get the same information if you just search for it. I have learned a lot from this forum as well.

Great information I appreciate this. My peblo and SMEBC just let me know since everything was sent up already then once I do my exams for my referred conditions then let them know that this should me added. In my case left sides radiclopthy was added however I have it left and right so they told me to let them know about the right side at my exams. Is this correct? As far as personal statements did you submit any? If so was after you recieved your findings back? Also did you ever do a commanders statement ?

Your PEBLO is not a process counselor. The PEBLO is an administrative assistant to your service’s MEB/PEB process authority. PAPER-PUSHER

Your service provides counsel through the legal system. Make contact with them. They can advise is a letter will be helpful.

When you go to your exams bring your medical records with you because they never have what they need. It helped me quite a bit as she told me they didn't send over many records. It's worth the time and effort to have it organized for them when you go. They should document that on your C&P exams which they use when creating a NARSUM. Don't be surprised if it is not on there, just appeal and talk with the physician. I submitted personal statements for some of my VA ratings, but I don't feel like they read them the VA used the same language of the C&P exams which were insufficient in my opinion. I was able to get radiculopathy added to my DOD rating and it was a pretty good percentage. Get everything you can added and try to get over 75%.

I did do the commanders statement how much it helped I don't know i'm actually waiting on my PEB appeal to get some conditions added because of the commanders statement so we shall see.
