Referred Conditions (recommendations)

I am currently requesting a PEB (active duty Marine with 16 yos) and was wondering what are other “referred conditions” that are beneficial to being found unfit.

I’ve had bilateral shoulder surgery, suffer from PTSD, major depressive disorder, and anxiety, have migraines, and I am working though some other neurological issues but am waiting to see a neurologist next month for diagnosis.

Any thoughts/recommendations as I start this journey?

Hire an attorney and try to get as many conditions added with the highest DOD% possible. If you don't expect to qualify for CRSC after medically retiring consider trying to retire via TERA.

Is TERA still a thing? I know it’s not in the Army anymore. It’s usually used as a force shaping method during periods of downsizing the officer corps.

Thanks! Yeah once I get the process stared I will look at hiring an attorney. @JMATTK, yes TERA is still a thing in the Marine Corps. At least until 2025.

It is for the Marines. The Army has been discontinued for a long time. The Marines decided to extend it and one of the main purposes is for AD Marines that are found unfit by PEB with at least 15 years but less than 20 years AD service.

I know JMATTK was the one that asked but here is a quote from part of the authorization on that link. Also, I strongly recommend going the TERA route unless you are certain you can get CRSC when you get out. TERA is the only exception to the 20 year rule where you can get both your earned longevity pension and ALL of your VA disability compensation because you would immediately qualify for CRDP.

"2. Justification for TERA submission. AC and AR TERA requests must meet one of the below criterion to be considered.
a. TERA in conjunction with waiving Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) findings. Marines found unfit by the PEB must have 15 but fewer than 20 years of active service and be willing to waive the PEB findings and proceedings in order to apply for TERA. PEB findings must be “unfit” in order to be considered for TERA. Marines can apply for TERA after accepting their “unfit” findings. Marines approved for early retirement in these cases must have a retirement date that occurs within the timeframe that a disability separation or retirement is expected to occur, usually within three to four months after accepting the “unfit” findings. Marines disapproved for TERA in conjunction with PEB findings will be required to execute their disability separation as directed by the PEB."

That’s a good job of taking care of their people.

Hey Dude, I'm in the same boat with almost same injuries except the shoulder surgery, I have a miner tear in rotator cuff shoulder with history of a TBI from my 1st deploymentin afgan. I'm currently at 15 years on deployment rn and leaning towards TERA. I was told by my command that they will help me start the process when I get back and send me to the TBI clinic to expedite the PEB process. I also have know idea about this journey lol. I noticed your post was from a mth ago, any updates or new info on the matter.

So glad to see that some branches still offer TERA!
