I just got the call today that I was approved for social security disability and I would get the percentage and amount I will be receiving in 2 weeks in the mail. What information do they use to determine how much you receive every month and I didnt know they used a percentage system...What percentage would someone get for certain disabilitys... mental, physical etc...Also will I still be able to go to school and/ or work?

Hi, congrats on your SSDI. Did you get it approved your first time? Again congrats.

Ivette,
I need help with mine. Should I wait until I get my paperwork back from the military & VA or should I start now?

Start it now. Mine was denied initally and I appealed but no response to the appeal.

Congrats! SSDI is base on what you paid into
SSA while you worked, the longer you worked more
SSDI you get. There is a max amount you get. You
can call and ask them or due the guess with them on the site
or use this is what you would get sheet every yr from them.
You will also get ten% of SSDI for you dependent's. For me
I worked for 18 years that came out to 1380 for myself and
my dependent's get 138 a month.

JohnDelta did you get denied originally? Are you on active duty?

I applied for SSDI and I also hired an attorney and he said that if I won my claim that I would receive 50% of my SSDI for each dependent not going over 180%. I also have a friend that collects SSDI and he got 50% more for his dependent until his dependent turned 18 and it went away. I'm not questioning what you receive but I just wanted to make sure which one is right because the 50% is a lot more money then the 10%.

No first time go. Yes I'm still on Active duty just waiting
on the PEB and VA%

I was not hard what help me, I never had a job before
joining the Army while still in High School.
That's what they told me, but I also have 20 conditions
plus I had to be seen by SSDI doctors!

I'm still working on Active duty. They told me once
I'm out it will change but the max is 2500 a month.
I'm at 2grand already while working.

Maybe that is why you get 10%. I see a judge in a few months and my attorney told me that I would get around 2500. Sorry to question what you said but I was getting worried if what you said was true because it wasn't much if it was 10% for a dependent.

You can determine what to expect by:

1. Sign up for a free account from the Social Security Administration here: http://ssa.gov/myaccount/

2. After logging in, go to the home page and click on the link "get your social security statement online" on the top left of the screen.

The statement is the same as the statement that the SSA used to send out in the mail annually, but stopped due to costs/budgeting issues. Even if you are not applying for SSI or SSDI at this time, you can still get an account...there is a wealth of info on the site to help you prepare for the future possibility of needing SSI/SSDI.

Well they have ways to verify the information that is given to them. But honesty is always best.

Its been almost 1 month since I appealed. Im going through the MEB also. Not sure what the delay is/

I spoke with my attorney as like everybody else that gets turned down the first time. My attorney had told me that VA records are good the MEB NARSUM can help and but the most of all is they had me start keeping a residual work log for example lost time due to medical appt, you injury claimed and reduced hours are a big help even with the VA for getting a award. I have three other service members who filed there SSDI claim. Two of us got turned down first time the other one awarded the first time around for SSDI to my surprise. It really struck me silly because he was the lowest rated by the VA and most of all the least injured and severly overweight the VA down graded his VA rating due to his obesity. I'm a loss of words I claimed Chronic Vertigo Meniere's disease with 100% total deafness to left ear (Dead Ear) with 50% 25% Speech tresshold to the right ear due a a sever head fracture 2 week Coma with associated headaches and I was denied. the guy who got his first go only claimed a right knee injury. Social Security is a funny animal when it comes to claims.

Yeah very strange how the SSA works. I think alot of it is the wording too. I think I need to send them my P3 profile and my C&P results.

Did you get your own lawyer or through the SSA? How long was it after your appeal did they contact you?

Thanks!

I did send them my P3 profile which helped but my attorney thought the NARSUM was best since it is better dictation of your injurys but the profile is good too. I went with a civilian lawyer for SSDI, I picked one who does both VA and SSDI since they were more familiar with all the military and VA medical records. The first Attorney which knew nothing of VA claims just looked at my medical records and gave me the Doe In the Headlights Look!! I knew I was going to know more about the records then him. But the attorney I hired, that does both VA and SSDI new what everything was Military Profiles, NARSUM, PEB unfit memo everything he just went thru it like nothing else saying here get this get that for me he was on his game and offered to even fight the VA once I get my benafits letter at discharge to get 100% UI and the kickers. He was awsome and not a dime out of pocket just get his % of back pay.
