I have a syrinx inside my spinal cord canal. Is this rated under VA disabilites? Does anyone else have this or know anyhting about this condition?

I am active duty of 8 years and I also have a syrinx inside my spinal cord. My package was sent in a few months ago. I have heard the minimum rating is 30%.

Thanks for the response. Is this why you got MEB or do you more back related problems?

Yes, I only have syringomyelia that affects my whole life, work, sleep, gaining weight, any physical activity etc. The base doctor seems skeptical that I will get anything though, but she is a hater lol.

Is that only what you have?

I have a syrinx c-4 through t6, I have had two lumbar back surgeries with the last being a fusion of l5-s1. I also just found out that i have three bulging disk in my neck and one is herniated. All this has been going on since late 2008. I have been on and off of profiles since then, i have only done a walk fittness assesments since then. I am pretty sure i am about to get a MEB.

Below is what you can find in the VA schedule of ratings for this condition. Mine is at the T11-L1 levels and caused several things to happen to include bowel and bladder issues. At the end of the day and if I am reading the below right, the cyst is a min 30% and the other issues are added as long as they cannot be attributed to other stuff… one of my MRI reports states the other issues are explained by the location of the cyst… so that in itself should be evidence and not subjective to another disease process. Added to that, I underwent a bunch of test with the urologist who also stated in his report that he found nothing and thought it was neurogenic bladder but wanted a neurologist to confirm, and mine did. So for my case I think how this is applies... is 30% for the min and the rest for the bowel and bladder issues which should come back 30 and 40% (looked at the reports and then the schedule of ratings). You should look up whatever other issues the cyst has caused, they can and should be rated separately in the perspective area it effects. I should have an answer on mine in a couple weeks, I will let you know how it goes. Good luck!
§4.124a Schedule of ratings—neurological conditions and convulsive disorders
8024
Syringomyelia:
Minimum rating......................................................................................................... 30
Note: It is required for the minimum ratings for residuals under diagnostic codes 8000-8025, that there be ascertainable residuals. Determinations as to the presence of residuals not capable of objective verification, i.e., headaches, dizziness, fatigability, must be approached on the basis of the diagnosis recorded; subjective residuals will be accepted when consistent with the disease and not more likely attributable to other disease or no disease. It is of exceptional importance that when ratings in excess of the prescribed minimum ratings are assigned, the diagnostic codes utilized as bases of evaluation be cited, in addition to the codes identifying the diagnoses.

thanks for the info!

I also pee like a champ! about 15 times a day, and I'm not sure and the doc is not sure if the syrinx is causing it.

And are you getting your rating through VA or DOD?

I know this thread is old, but were you automatically placed into a MEB? Also how were your profiles written? Mine is permanent but currently only addressing sit ups and not section 5.

I was on a profile (light duty) for two and a half years...once my base medical did their job and sent my package off it went very quick. I had thorough documentation and I was retired in a matter of 6 months. 30% for syrnomyelia DOD and VA

I too have a syrinx that goes from my T3-4 down to T9-10.

My referred conditions are DDD lumbar spine and radiculopathy in left leg.

Syrinx was included in an addendum along with DDD cervical and multiple hurniated discs in cervical/thoracic spine.

ROM 25 deg forward flex c-spine, 10 deg forward flex t -spine

IPEB ratings were 20%DOD and 70%VA.

What are the chances of the Syrinx bumping my VA to 100%?

What do I need to ask the OJAG attorney?
