Nice! I’m happy to hear that you won’t be on the hook to pay that severance pay back. Thanks for updating us on the the info!
I am too. The ODC said a lot of folks get confused on the whole "pay it back part" and as far as appealing it goes he said I would be crazy given that I have everything to lose, and only the status of "retired" to gain. He said my situation is equal to seeing a real unicorn in the wild, and it really just shouldn't happen.

That was enough to make me just take the money and ride off into the sunset. I will not make the decision official until Monday which is the 6 days given to appeal.

Ok so here is some new learned knowledge.
I am taking my severance pay which is approx. $140K. My unfit condition that is separating me was rated at 0 by the VA. However the VA has rated me at 100% disabled.

What does this mean?
This means that I do NOT have to pay back a single red cent of the severance pay because the Air Force is not paying me for a condition that the VA is going to pay me for. The ODC has 100% confirmed this
That's awesome! What if the VA rated you say 10% for the condition that separated you and the Air Force rated you at 0%. Would you have to pay the full severance or would there be a smaller amount owed back?

So I would have to pay back 10% every month from the VA money, which would mean that I would have to live forever to pay off the full severance

That seems like a pretty busted system... I'm happy you don't have to pay it back!

It is, but it's also a product of in past they used to garnish the severance check payback by a lot. Now they base it on what conditions the VA rated you for. So in my situation the process and system works great, but for many others it's a giant pain.

Overall for all of us going through this process, please keep your head up and stay positive. I went from massive depression on Monday when my CC said they are separating me, to no sleep that night nervous wreck on Tuesday, to being shown how good I really got it with everything on Wednesday and now I am at peace with all of it. Just keep your head up, talk with the ODC find a VA advocate that can explain it to you (can recommend one if needed) and stay positive.
