USAF AD GSU Under Patrick SFB - Bipolar II Timeline

It has been a while.

Couple of updates...

06.12.2025 - Finished All VA Exams
07.14.2025 - Received E-Mail from myFSS stating that "The Physical Evaluation Board Liaison Officer (PEBLO) at your base Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) sent your Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) package to the Air Force Personnel Center Physical Disability Operations Branch."

I have been waiting. No news yet.

Thanks, all!

Hi! I have received my proposed rating of 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) VA + 70% DoD.

Things are moving forward, and I am grateful for the sheer amount of information in this forum. I would not have been so informed if it weren't for the collective knowledge and shared experiences here. Thank you so much, all. I will continue to update the thread until my official medical retirement.

I hope your journey has been helpful for you and your condition. I’m just now starting mine as I was diagnosed recently, but I just have a small question: If, for instance, I was diagnosed with MMD/BP2 and just had a recommendation for MEB sent up, and it comes back approved and I begin that process; all of that aside for a moment, because simultaneously i was ets’ing in ten months and started my tap process can I still get medically retired/ the benefits that come with it/ and if I do can I still do an internship so i am not just out in the world alone with no money to support me? Sorry for the long arduous and confusing sentence question thing. Please tell me to explain better if not sure. I would love to get help on these answers and stop feeling like my stomach is outside of itself.

I will preface my response with:
1. Continue to seek help and treatment, that’s your number one priority always.
2. From my experience, take control of your own process. If needed, hiring an attorney may help you clear your mind a bit; but I was able to achieve a level of tranquility from doing tons of research. There’s a lot of waiting and “behind the curtain” processing, so be prepared for that.
3. Another thing that helped me was consulting with a therapist that was also a veteran. They can help you navigate this process.
4. Finally, please verify all the information below. If needed I can drop some other resources.

From what I understand, when you have both a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) recommendation and an approaching ETS date, the medical board process takes precedence and continues regardless of your original separation timeline. You’d be extended until the MEB was completed and then informed of any benefits.

When it comes to internship/job training; you may struggle to pursue the usual “SkillBridge” as they require a solid ETS date. However, there are many programs out there:

Hiring Our Heroes internships (6-12 weeks)
Wounded Warrior Internship Program for injured veterans
VR&E which can help you with school, job training and/or placement (this one is particularly useful during IDES as you can be automatically approved).

One thing I got from the experience so far is that there are people inside the system that do care. You won’t be “thrown out into the world alone.” If boarded out, you will have a monetary benefit and opportunities to better yourself.

Feel free to drop more specific questions if needed and I’ll be happy to help!

+ I re-read your post and noticed the 10 month mark. If it makes you feel a bit better, that’s a similar situation to what I was in.

+ I’d check on other threads. But I think the recommendation is to go with the flow until/if your reach an obstacle. Then seek legal counsel. I had a good experience with the Air Force/VA/Contractors so far.

can i apply for a GS-I.T. Position if I am in fact medically retired? Or am I barred.
Sure! I believe you may even have an advantage under the disabled veteran hiring benefits.

Happy to say that I have officially medically retired and had my final out yesterday.

Tips for navigating the outprocessing after receiving your notification from PEBLO:
  • Contact FSS & Finance with your orders and ask them to load your outprocessing checklist and begin any other critical requirements. For some reason, my orders didn't flow automatically, so I had to push things forward myself.
  • As with everything else in this process, you have to fight for yourself. You will likely have just a couple of weeks to finish TAPS and attend to any other base requirements. Try your best to be on top of your stuff, and don't be afraid to ask for exemptions.
Feel free to reach out with any other questions. I will be contacting the VA today or next week to officially load the VA Disability into the system, and I expect the first payment will be on December 1st. Thank you all again for all the help in this journey.

It took four months for your Pueblo to reach out?

Indeed. After the official recommendation for the MEB I waited around 3-4 months to be contacted by the PEBLO. Granted, it was during the holidays (Christmas and New Years).

Good Morning, Folks.

This forum has helped tremendously in taking the steps to seek help and start a conversation with my PCM about a possible MEB. Thank you very much for that, it was literally life-changing (and possibly life-saving).

I will continuously update this thread with my timeline to help other people in similar situations. If any of the experienced users see something that I should be wary of throughout my journey, I would really appreciate it if you would let me know as I am trying my best to make informed decisions on all steps. For example, I know I am super early in the process but I am already backing up all my medical history and military records. Furthermore, just for some context, I am a 6-year SSgt in the USAF and have never had any administrative issues on my record.

2021 - Qatar Deployment / Afghanistan Evacuation Support (Possible Trigger)
2021 - 2024 - Confidential Counselors (Military OneSource and MFLCs)
July 2024 - Finally Decide to Seek Medical Help
October 2024 - Psychiatrist Diagnostic of Bipolar II (Comorbid with Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD) (After 3 Appointments) + Medication
10.21.2024 - Electronic Communication with Patrick AFB MDG
10.28.2024 - AAC 31/DAV 41 Coded

Thanks, all!
How high of a percentage did you get for solely your BP II claim? If you don’t mind me asking.
