Current Step: Assigned VA Rater - waiting on proposed ratings to come back

Hi everyone, I am going through the Med Board (IDES) process. I'm just waiting for my proposed ratings to come back from the VA. I called the VA, and they said my case has already been assigned a rater - great news.

When I enlisted, I signed for 5 years and a $40,000 bonus. $10,000 was paid when I got to my first duty station, and the remainder is spread out over equal payments on my anniversary year.

Question: I have received approximately $16,000 out of the $40,000. What happens at the end of this process? The Med Board is a result of something that happened to me in service. Do I pay it back, or do they pay me? Is there some overseeing authority that makes the determination?

Please help! Thank you.

If medically separated or retired you do not have to pay any of it back. There is a reason these bonuses don't pay you all at once in the beginning. So that in these situations the military doesn't overpay. Hopefully you can reach the anniversary year 1 more time before being medically separated or retired so that you can collect more of the bonus before getting out.

Understood. That makes sense. I appreciate the clarification. Thank you!
