Any biologics/immunosuppressant by reg means you can’t stay in unless you get a waiver. Every branch has own specifics but this is from DoD retention standards

Howdy. How long did it take for them to inform you were unfit? It’s currently the only thing I have claimed besides anxiety due to psoriasis all over my body.

Use the search function as there are several detailed posts on DOD rating Ankylosing spondylitis. The TDLR is that they have traditional rated it very low. They usually try to rate just based off range of motion for your back or incapacitating episodes (not well defined in the VSARD) but has been interpreted by the military as bed rest. You need to have all impacted joints well documented and tied in your doctor's notes to your Ankylosing spondylitis.

Im going thru almost the exact process right now with AS and Humira/cosentyx. What was your final rating if you don’t mind me asking?

Hey all, I'm an attorney who deals with these cases quite frequently. I'll say this: there are many ways to be found FIT despite your condition; however, they are very low probability. Without giving legal advice, I'd say you should first investigate any treatment that isn't an immunosuppressant and doesn't need refrigeration/can be administered on deployment. These two factors touch 99% of these types of cases.

Thanks for the info! I did try a non-refrigerated medicine (it was a pill) to treat AS and it honestly did nothing if not made it worse. I know everyone’s body is different with certain meds but I think if you really want to treat AS, you need to be on a injectable med with physical therapy of some sort.

@RedT343 Do you want to stay in/found fit? There are strategies you can try, based on your MOS/rating/office. If you haven't engaged an attorney for this, you may want to; be they military or private. The key for any attorney will be you having a doctor who will work with you to get to fit.

Not trying to be cagey, just can't give legal advice to non-clients, so I'm trying to help out as much as possible within the bounds of the rules.

With my almost nonexistent range of motion because of AS, the pain and the medication I tried to be real with myself and I would do more harm than good if I tried to stay in. It’s in my best interest, physically and mentally to try a different route. I really appreciate your insight, it means a lot burn since I’m on medboard already I do have a lawyer I talk too. Just thought maybe to get some different opinions on it through here

Thanks Man I appreciate the reply, was the 100% just for the AS? Or was that total with everything else you claimed?
Everything else claimed. AS was only 40% and that was all that was unfitting for DoD so that’s why DoD was 40%. Officially last 2 days of terminal leave and retire on Monday. Good luck with your process
