Hey everyone!

I’m super appreciative of everyone that contributes to these posts. They have been invaluable.

I’m medically retiring just short of 14 years. (13 years 8 months) and need help estimating what my CRSC will likely be.

Here’s my basic info:
1) 50% base pay of high three: 2600
2) 70% DOD medical retirement
3) TIS: 13 years 8 months
4) Estimated 100% VA (1 spouse, 2 children under 18)
5) No
6) CRSC estimation: 70%. Could you please also calculate 100% as well.

No need to calculation at 100% CRSC. 70% CRSC already maxed out your compensation. Your CRSC would be $1,776.67. Below are the numbers:

Thank you!

I may be getting 90% DOD rating during my med board from Migraines and PTSD - both fitting criteria for combat/combat related.

Will a 90% DOD rating result in a possibly higher CRSC amount?

No. That's not how it works. CRSC is just a mechanism to claw back money lost due to VA offset. Not everyone gets CRSC money even if approved. So 90% DOD =75% since that's the max compensation. If your VA compensation + longevity pension earned is less than your chapter 61 pension you are maxed out on compensation. Say you take the total of your VA compensation and earned longevity pension and its higher than your chapter 61 pension by $300 then your max CRSC benefit is $300. CRSC helps those the most who served a long time but didn't reach 20 years. If you were in 3 years and then medically retired there isn't much of an earned pension that you are missing out on.

So see the bottom line on the calculation? $6,084.16 that is the most you can get by law because that amount is the value of your VA compensation + earned longevity pension. So no matter the numbers by getting more via chapter 61 pension or less the max you can get between all income is that total amount.

Okay, thanks for the detailed explanation!

Yeah I served quite awhile but won’t make it to 20. It hurts not being able to go the full distance so this helps a little.

Hey, I have a few follow up questions regarding CRSC and my current situation;

I’m currently med boarding for combat related PTSD and suspect I will have a DOD rating of 70% from this.

I also have a P3 in for migraines from combat related TBIs that should be factored into my overall DOD percentage at 50%.

These two disqualifying conditions should bring my DOD percentage to 85% right?

Is there any monetary difference in CRSC between 70% and 85% DOD ratings?

Then for the VA, are they the ones who deem injuries and “combat” or “non-combat” related?

I’m sorry but I’m just confused about all of this.

My TIS is 13 years 8 months.
My high three is 2600.

The reason I ask is my migraine P3 may be cancelled and for an admin reason from my PCM and I want to know if it’s worth fighting to maintain the migraine P3 since it would increase my DOD percentage to 85%.

Thank you so much for the help!

Max DOD% is 75% by law. Always fight to have it done correctly but know what you are fighting for. If you are capped on CRSC due to combination of Longevity pension earned + VA compensation total then going higher for CRSC% will not help.

I think you are mixing things up though. CRSC is something you apply for after you get out and its completely separate from what the PEB determines. Also what one entity decides isn't binding meaning just because the PEB said combat related doesn't guarantee you that your branch will agree and award you CRSC. Think of it as supporting evidence towards your case but its not a slam dunk.
