I have received my findings and orders. I have heard from multiple people that have been medboarded that at one point during my out processing I have to either accept a lump sum amount of money, or keep my 100% VA paycheck. Can anyone explain to me if this is true or not? the only thing I have done is accepted my DoD rating, then I received my retirement orders. I was given 15 days to out process the base and I do not know if I am missing anything. My PEBLO is brand new and does not have a clue. They emailed my findings and did not even know how to tell me what was my rating and I had to look it up myself. NEED HELP! Thank you

There are a few variables to this for you now that you have reached this point. A question I would ask that would help answer your question is what was your DOD rating? That will determine if there is any severance or if you are medically retired. I am assuming you are 100% VA rated based on your post, but there is a lot that goes into what compensation you will receive once the medboard process is complete. Generally, any DOD compensation you receive will be offset by your VA compensations. However, if you have 20 years or more of active duty time, you can possibly receive both your DOD retirement and VA compensation. That is if you qualify for CRDP. Again, you need at least 20 years active duty time and meet some other criteria to qualify for that. There is also CRSC that you may qualify for if they determined your condition was combat related. CRSC is setup to offset the loss of DOD compensation and there is a forum setup specifically for CRSC on this site so I suggest you look into that as well. I am no expert by anymeans and I am sure others will chime it here, but there is just a couple more variables we need to thouroughly answer your questions.

More details please. how long have you been in. Which branch. DOD% (assuming 20% or less) Total VA%? Was the unfitting condition combat related? Using VA math would you still reach 100% VA total if you removed the unfitting condition from the equation?

Non-Combat related injury. I received 40%(10+10+10+10+10) DoD and 100% VA P&T. I have 8 years of service in the Air Force. Cumulative total percentage was 350% (70+50+20+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10). I would still reach 100% VA even without the unfitting conditions.

Okay but if you are 40% DOD then there is no severance check. You get a chapter 61 pension that will most likely be offset by your VA compensation. You will get tricare for you and your family for life.

Once you are retired look into CRSC. If you have any qualifying conditions you can get a check for from CRSC to recoup the money lost due to the VA offset. The most common cap is max pay which is the combination of your pension & VA compensation. As for a calculating the value of your earned longevity pension use which is 20% if on old pension system or 16% if on the current BRS pension times your HIGH 3 pay which is calculated by adding your highest 36 months of pay and then dividing that total by 36. For most that pension value is the cap. You can get less but not more by law.

Also, always accept VA compensation by not checking box 26 of the VA benefits application. I am sure your MSC directed you to not check it. VA compensation is tax free. Also, if you recoup your lost pension via CRSC it too is tax free. You could end up with tricare, your total VA compensation and the value of your earned longevity pension via CRSC and in that case all of your income would be exempt from taxes! Pretty cool huh?

That is my exact question, I do not know who I will be signing that paperwork with. So far, every organization on base (Medical, and Military Processing Flight) has told me they do not know what form is that. That document with the "box 26" is the most important document for me but nobody on base seems to know about that paper. If you know which is the name of that form and who is supposed to give it to me I would appreciate it! I am trying to get the VA compensation instead of the other scam. I also need to look into CRSC. I haven't heard about that from my MSC, PEBLO, or anyone. Thanks for your heads up.

Its the original form that the MSC had you sign with the VA to get started and claim conditions. Even if you filled it out wrong it would be super easy to fill it out again and not check the box to ensure you get VA compensation. You need that box unchecked to get CRSC too. So if in the future you apply for CRSC and get approved you need to accept VA disability to get CRSC.

Thank you so much sir, I just found it and box 26 (Do NOT pay me VA compensation. I do NOT want to receive VA compensation in lieu of retired pay.) is not checked. Thank you!
