So I was told by my doctors that if I applied for retirement back in February that they wouldn’t Med Board me. However, ow that because I’m in heart failure and my cardiologist hasn’t let me work since March due to COVID I was told the hospital reached out to AFPC to see if they could go ahead and MEB me. I hit 20 in December and have about 40 days of leave. You think I’ll have any issues making it to 20. They still don’t know the cause and I have a muscle biopsy and a tilt table test scheduled in August. What’s everybody’s thoughts.

At this point, there is no way that the the full IDES process could conclude prior to you fulfilling the terms of your 20. Also, they cant Even MEB you if your still under treatment for a major health issue that has yet to be resolved.
Areyou on a code37 right now?

Actually they can board you while you are in a major health issue that is chronic like CHF. But I agree you can make 20. Easily. I doubt you will get a decision from the PEB before you hit 20. If you get fast tracked, appeal to the FPEB, then to your service secretary. Save your leave and don't sell it. That along strings you alone 40 days + 20 days of PTDY = 2 months.

San Antonio Military Medical Center has a heart failure clinic and a fellowship for cardiologist that want to specialize in CHF. You might want to ask for a medical TDY????

I thought they got rid of the appeal to the secretary? Am I mistaken?

You can still appeal to the SAF, I just tried this year. You must have new medical evidence or proof of a mistake in the process before they even hear the appeal though. They reviewed my case and declined to make a ruling on it and returned it. It is definitely still an option.

I submitted the appeal request first week of January, the SAF office signed the "piss off" memo in 24 March, PEBLO go it 7 April and I got the notification from the Peblo 28 April.

That’s good to hear for me, sorry they denied. If they decide to do it I just have to make it until 14 Dec.

I don’t see a lot of benefit to the MEB for me except knowing my ratings before retirement.

No they have me under a code 31.

If you want to just retire normally now would be the time to put in your request. once they switch The 31 to a 37 then you can no longer apply fo retirement until the IDES process is complete. I was only 1 month away from being able to request my retirement and they switched my 31 to a 37 so now I am in Limbo status.

I’m working it now, had to have a CMS case established today to change a code in MILPDS.

The benefit to medical retirement is :
1. Retiring at the DoD disability rate if possible, this only applies if your DOD rating is higher than your 20 year 50% retirement
2. Having your ratings proposed and fast tracked to signing for the ratings at retirement instead of waiting to go through the ratings process after retirement
3. Having your retirement documented as a Permanent Medical Disability Retirement, for any case that might be desireable to you

These are all possible outcomes if you went through the board, but they all do not apply to everyone nor do they provide benefits to every scenario, but they "what ifs" in case you could use them.

If also receiving VA pay via CRDP does this negate a higher DOD rating, In terms of the overall monthly amount you will receive?

Ref: "If also receiving VA pay via CRDP does this negate a higher DOD rating, In terms of the overall monthly amount you will receive? "

1. VA compensation is not CRDP. On the other hand, VA comp and DFAS pay item "CRDP" are the CRDP (program) elements.

2. The combination of residual retired pay (from VA offset) and CRDP cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.

3. In other words, if entitled to CRDP and receiving Medical retired pay, any retired pay left over from the waiver reduces the amount of CRDP.

Ron,

So basically it doesn’t matter if you get let’s say 70% DOD medical retirement, you will still only get your normal 50 percent for longevity retirement?

If you had 20 years...20 x 2.5% = 50% longevity. The answer to your question is "yes".

CRDP + residual retired pay cannot exceed the longevity portion of retired pay.

So update to this story. I was told they will MEB me for congestive heart failure. I asked about my migraines since I receive Botox injections and also Ménière’s disease because I have episodes at least once a week. She said that those weren’t unfitting conditions which I’m not sure I believe.

I have to make it to 14 Dec to reach 20. Right now I have 40 days of leave saved up. Do they have to let meuse those? Or will they try to rush this and pay me for the unused leave balance. Also, how many days of permissive leave do I get? Finally, how many days do they have to give you for Outproccesing? I’m trying to figure out a timeline of how long I can drag this out for and still make it to 20.

Thanks for the help!

i think you will be fine, people Use the term MEB very generically. For instance I was told I would be MEBd in July of 2019, they didn’t code me with a 37 until March of 2020 and my NARSUM has yet to be complete. Basically I’m still at step 1 after all this time.

its a slow slow process
