CRSC question

Good AfterNoon,

I retired on 2/13/2025 through the IDES process. I’m 100% P/T with the VA married and with one child.

I waived my pension to collect the VA but applied for CRSC. I keep hearing so many different answers on how the calculations are done but nothing makes sense.

My DFAS shows that I waived $3060.00 to collect my VA.

I’m 100% VA and 100% DOD. What happens from here? I should hear a response back from CRSC soon because I reach my 90 days since they received my application in two weeks.

If anyone can help me understand what to expect that would be great.

So CRSC is there to claw back part of the VA offset tax free up to the amount you lose out on. So a lot depends on your service. Since you have about 8 years of service if on the new plan that is 2% for year that's 16% of your HIGH 3. That's how much your earned pension was worth before medically retiring you. Take the value of your earned pension and add it to the VA compensation you get paid. If your pay is higher or the same as the value of those 2 things combined CRSC can't help you.

It looks like your pension HIGH 3 was $4,080. Since 75% of that would equal $3,060. So if BRS take $4080 times 16% equals $652.80. That what you are losing out on if all of your chapter 61 pay is offset by getting VA compensation. CRSC uses VA rating charts. So look up to see what % is needed to max out. Basically it looks like 30% CRSC is married with kids. If single you would need 40% to max out CRSC.

Then apply for CRSC after your VA conditions are final which can take a month or 2 after getting out. Start now filling out the application and getting all the docs needed.

BTW if you are legacy and 2.5% per year then its 20%. 20% of 4,080 = $816 so that would be the max amount instead and then you might need 50% CRSC to max out compensation. Also, you get the lower of the 2 so if 10% CRSC then you get that amount instead. Its the CRSC pay using VA pay tables up to the max amount allowed. If your CRSC % pay is lower then you get that lower amount.

I have a final VA rating of 100% P&T married with one child. So does that mean I won’t get anything from CRSC?

Has no bearing on CRSC. Sounds like you need to look up each thing and get back to the basics. VA is completely separate from CRSC as a form of entitlement and pay. It's tax free too.
