You don't have to pay it back if medically separated or retired. Then the only risk you run is being found fit and needing to serve the entire contract that you signed up for. I would though. I would sign up for whatever gives you the largest bonus. Make sure to save it though. Also, make sure you know the structure. In your scenario you will want to try to get as much of it up front. If it pays out in thirds for example you will only see 1/3 of the bonus money if you are kicked out or retired medically.Similar situation myself! I'm also Cyber and started Dupixent for Asthma a few months ago. My RILO is typically in July. This year I was RTD as normal but started Dupixent shortly after in August. My pulmonologist mentioned that a biologic will initiate another MEB. I contacted my PCM and asked her about the MEB. She said that she would bring it up during their monthly MEB discussion that my base clinic has. They called me and let me know that they won't submit another MEB until my RILO in July 2025, something about satisfying a "trial" period of Dupixent... Ok I guess. The issue is my contract runs out May 2025. The SRB just dropped and i'm thinking of extending for 36 months to get a piece of that pie in the meantime and see if there is a chance of medical retirement. Based on what I've read, you don't have to pay any SRB funds back if found medically unfit. A part of me wants to re-enlist for the maximum of 6 years to get the biggest SRB but I'm nervous about being returned to duty for my next RILO, even while on Dupixent. I'm ready to get out and do not want to PCS again but sure could use the money! Just wanted to share my experience so far and follow along.
Best of luck!
Had an appointment w my new PCM yesterday and she said something very similar regarding the trial period. She will also bring up my case during my base clinic's monthly MEB meeting to see if they want to push my paperwork now/soon or just wait till my RILO in MAY 2025. I will meet w my PCM, Pulmonology, and Allergy again in March for followups and to see if anything changes. Best of luck to you as well!Similar situation myself! That's good to know and yes I have a daily inhaler and still take corticosteroids as well as the biologic. I haven't received anything yet and still don't know what my VA rating would be.Nice. Glad to see your case is now moving along. If you aren't already, make sure you request your doctor to prescribe you a daily inhaler (If youre on a biologic, I'm assuming you need a daily inhaler as well). 30% rating for daily inhaler.
