Possible LIMDU

Hello everyone,

I have reached out to this forum in hopes of finding answers to my current situation.

I have self-referred myself to mental health or MHOOD clinic out here in San Diego. If the option is a LIMDU I might take it. I am worried though that this might result in myself being ADSEP'd or being medically discharged. Little back story about myself:

1. Been in the Navy for 14 years and 3 months now.
2. I am a Chief Petty Officer (E-7)
3. Went on on my 1st LIMDU in 2009. (Depressive Disorder)
4. Went on a 2nd LIMDU in June 2012. (Depressive Disorder
5. Was cleared fit for full after 2nd limdu September 2012.
6. Haven't had any mental health issues since then.

I have talked to several HMs and navy mental health doctors and so far I have been told that going LIMDU will not get me kicked out, and that just because I have been limdu almost 9 years ago wouldn't count against me on this one. Just want to know if anyone has been in this situation where they might have been on a 3rd, 4th, or even 5th limdu before they had an MEB started on them.

I still plan on staying Navy, I have six years left before I retire and I want to finish my time left. Can anyone please share their experience on this?

I am a little confused. If you haven't had an MH issues since then, what would drive a LIMDU?

SInce March this year, I've been feeling symptoms that are MDD, anxiety, and PTSD. Since we have no psychiatric services onboard I have been tele counseling with mental health shore services in San Diego. A significant even and add on stress onboard the ship and personal issues at home have trigger all these that I have felt before when I went on limdu the very first time. Mental health has mentioned that a LIMDU might be offered as an option depending on the severity of my conditions. My question is would they consider this a 4th limdu?

So I take you are now having symptoms. Telehealth makes sense, not only given your duty locations but also with the current COVID situation. I hope you will continue to take advantage of the opportunity. The challenge that is rarely spoken here, is that these conditions effect members even after they leave the service. Hope you will work your MH care plan with diligence.

So does that mean it would be considered a 1st limdu again? I recognize that I need help. Navy culture that I've experienced in my previous commands and from my mentors have always discouraged seeking mental health. They would always recommend fleet and family to me as this doesn't go in my medical record. I want to seek health, but at the same time I worry about a MEB/PEB being started if they see this as a 4th limdu. Thank you again for the response.

Would you mind providing further explanation? It is my understanding that as long as the LIMDU periods are not done consecutively then there should be no problem doing a 3rd LIMDU period.

If you recognize you need help, get help. There are many military rumors regarding MH. Most are not true. Having a MH diagnosis is not automatically disqualifying. There are many people that leave the military via medical retirement that also have a VA rated MH conditions, but the MH condition is found fitting! This is because the symptoms are low because the member manages their MH through treatment. If you want to finish, seek treatment.

There are times MH conditions are unfitting. I got a call on a Saturday night from the command post. A family member called asking what to to do with her brother/member. She said he did not recognize her, didn't know where he was..... He had a psychotic break. That type of MH issue is unfitting.

Use your resources and keep your symptoms low. Keeping MH symptoms low increases a persons quality of life, high symptoms reduce quality of life. You not only have several years left in the military, you likely have many years to follow retirement. Live well.

Update:

i was finally placed on LIMDU on 08 Jul 20. However, the convening authority has not signed yet in order to get my LIMDU Orders. Its been about two weeks now and still waiting. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I never received LIMDU orders and I’ve been on since 27MAR.

Basically its the accounting code for limdu personnel. If u are on a ship then are required to be detached since the ship is not authorize to carry limdu personnel 100 is for fit for full 105 limdu

I started my first LIMDU JAN 27 and didn’t receive my orders until may 25. Not sure if it is suppose to be that long, but that was my wait time

You can see your acc in nsips or mynavyassignments
Theres no TEMDU status in my assignment history on NSIPS and I have not received any LIMDU orders. The only thing I have is the signed med board sheet starting my LIMDU dated 27 MAR.

Attached is where you can find your limdu status in mynavyassignments
