Seeking MED Board Advice

Hello, I am active duty Air Force, and I have been in for a little over 3.5 years. I have been diagnosed with chronic migraines about a year ago, but within the last few months, these migraines have gotten worse. I have missed two days of work within the last two weeks. I have called the nurse advice line for these misses, and they had recommended I rest/put me on quarters. However, my leadership is getting angry with me and I think they are starting to doubt my issues. I am reaching out to my PCM and my shirt regarding this, but I am wondering how the med board process works. I don't want to get in trouble for a legitimate issue that I have, and I am getting frustrated. Please lead me in the right direction.

If you have exhausted all treatment options you’ll have to talk to your PCM about initiating one, especially since your migraines appear to be chronic and are causing frequent absences from work which make them potentially disqualifying for continued service. Eventually if not returned to duty your provider will need to complete a narrative summary describing your condition/treatment and your commander will need to describe how your condition impacts your job to include if they feel you should be retained. There are a lot of steps after that but I don’t want to get to ahead of myself. As hard as it is don’t feel bad about getting the treatment you need and deserve, and if you feel you are being punished for it elevate it up the chain and to your PCM. I certainly know how you feel though, especially with more “invisible wounds” where people just assume if they can’t see it it must not be real, hang in there.

You might want to schedule a face to face with your PCM to talk about your health and perhaps request your PCM reach out to your command.
