I just got a MED board intiated on me because I am going blind due to either chemical/radiation exposure destroying all the stem cells in my eyes. I was just wondering if anyone knew what my disability rating would be round about? my current vision is 20/125 and getting worse and its not correctable at all.

1Review for entitlement to special monthly compensation under 38 CFR 3.350.

Thanks for the info, im guessing it would be between 60 and 70% then until it progresses further.
And that would be of my base pay right?

Assuming that the PEB finds the condition unfitting (sounds like if it is irreversable, they probably would) and the VA rates you correctly, then you are correct. Whatever the VA rates you at when the package is submitted will be the percentage rated and sent to the PEB. The only thing that progression of the condition could increase would be your VA rating, not your DoD rating. Depending upon your rank and martial/dependent status, you may make more with VA compensation vs. DoD compensation. Unless your condition was caused by/in combat (CRSC), you will only receive the higher of the two. The max DoD pays to is 75% of base pay (even if you are rated higher than that).

I would add onto that, being that if it can't be corrected and you do go blind eventually, you will get 100% VA.

Also, special monthly compensation (SMC).

Also, I am wondering if the military will give you TDRL as opposed to PDRL since your condition is not stable and can get worse, which could result in a maximum final PDRL rating......

I would think that they would PDRL being that there is no chance of recovery of eyesight, thus cutting their losses now instead of worrying about it later IMHO...

Grizz13, you have another good point - which was what I was wondering when I read this thread. They may "cut their losses" and PDRL the SM now rather than later.

But in some respects, this could "short" the SM a fair rating, as the condition could deteriorate and get worse after a PDRL rating now, and a PDRL rating now may not be a full PDRL percentage that he could be eventually due if placed on TDRL.

Be interesting to see what the military does in this case. It seems to me the DoD is in a "hold 'em and/or fold 'em" position and can go either way. I just hope the SM gets his fair and just due out of this process and that the rating and disposition is accurate.

And I know you think the same way!

Thanks all for the information, update on my case is I am currently far past legally blind current visual acuity is worse than 20/400 and my med board is in the PEB portion of the med board. And thanks to my wife taking the time to type this for me.

Dear Clivin and Clivin's mate:

Thank-you for giving us an update on where you are at with the IDES (MEB/PEB/VA) process.

Please keep us posted as to your military rating and your VA rating.

And a BIG thank-you to your Wife for typing us back!

Is your vision worse than it was when you first got IDES/MED BOARD evaluations? If so, I hope you have been getting those eye changes documented in your records.

Just want you to get the correct and proper rating for your issues - nothing more - BUT NOTHING LESS!

Stay the course and remain strong throughout the DoD IDES MEB/PEB process. :)

Best Wishes!
